I am going to start this thread as a carry over from another thread since I pulled the latter thread off-topic.

I am going to copy and paste some quotes from the other thread....Moderator, I do so hope that is alright and will not be considered "trolling". If you have a better way, please do help me... Thank you...

Quote: Simonline: "Like most of the Israelites of that time and geographical location, the Messiah would have been multi-lingual and would have chosen His language/scriptures according to the mother tongue of the person with whom He was interacting. What's this obsession with knowing which languages the Messiah spoke or which version of the Scriptures He might have used? What is important is that whatever language He spoke or whatever version of the Scriptures He used, He would always have communicated the Truth." End Quote: Simonline

My brother, I am obsessed with anything that He did or said. I have studied Him and His ways in the Gospels for years. He put that longing in my heart. It was good in His sight to do that within me :) There was a great need in my heart to learn of Him as He longingly called us to do while He was here . (Matthew 11: 28-29). I love the KJV here (as I love it in the whole Bible) because He said ~learn of me~. Other versions say ~learn from me~. I contend we can learn and learn and learn from Him and yet never learn of (about) Him...i.e. His ways. Yes, it is important, as you say that He always communicated the Truth no matter what Scripture He used. But He communicated truth by His life and actions, also, and so I say it is very important that He met each individual where they were at and used the language and the version of each individual that He ministered to. So, if I long to know each detail of His Life, while He was here, please know that it is important to me, even if it may not be to you. We must remember that Messiah communicated Truth not only through Scripture but by His very life and actions amongst those He ministered to. That is why the disciples, as you well know, were with Him 24 hours per day to not only learn from what He said but to watch His every action and every one of His ways of LOVE.

I think you have a fundamentally flawed understanding of the relationship between Biblical Judaism and Helenism.

I am certain I do as I am only beginning to learn these things....

Far from being an improvement on Biblical Judaism, Helenistic culture and philosophy has done unimaginable damage to the Divine Revelation that is Judeo-Christianity. Col.2:8 would I think be a better appraisal of Greek culture and philosophy than the one that you presently hold.

I obviously miscommunicated in my previous post...sorry. Edershein presents the western dispersion of the Jews. and all that involved, with the preparation for the gospel. Maybe he just meant the Greek language...I don't know. He says that Philo was the final piece of the puzzle, so to speak in the Helenization of the Jews. As I was reading about Philo yesterday, he obviously was of superior intellect but he had some really weirdo beliefs. And from all of the things they believed, apparently, I would agree fully agree with your statement that that culture and philosophy has done horrible damage because Edershiem was even talking about Kabbala or whatever it is called being around there and I believe that would be almost equivilent to New Age of this day. I know Kabbala is still around...I considered my a lot overlooking the Sea of Galilee from someone involved in it and one look at her website made my skin crawl.

So, what I was trying to say was that I was surprised that God would have allowed such weirdo-type thinking to be so involved in the preparation of the Gospel? Comprendo? Me no speak French, only a little Spanish

Whilst the apostle Paul communicated the truth to the Gentiles, he was not communicating Greek concepts and philosophy which was often diametrically opposed to the JUdeo-Christian Scriptural world-view. Instead he was communicating radical new Hebraic Truth using familiar Greek terminology with which the Greek speaking Gentile world could relate.

Thank you for that! If you ever come on a speaking tour in the US, let me know. Our churches, for the most part, definitely need to hear that!

See: Jesus The Jewish Theologian and/or Paul The Jewish Theologian by Brad Young http://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Jewish-T.../dp/1565630602 http://www.amazon.com/Paul-Jewish-Th.../dp/1565632486

Amanda, he has started a list for me, also :)

No. I believe all four gospels were originally written in Hebrew but were quickly translated into Greek (See: Understanding The Difficult Words of Jesus by David Bivin and Roy Blizzard Jnr. http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-.../dp/156043550X ). I believe that the rest of the New Testament was written in Greek but still communicated the Truth from within a Hebraic context and world-view.

Even the Gospel of John, huh? I need to look up the Hebrew definition of "Logos". When do you think it started changing that the Truth was not communicated from within a Hebraic context and world-view? I imagine that could be a hugh study within itself.

Well, so the hugh question for me would be, how would I know if I believe the truth from within a Hebraic context and world-view? And how would I know that that is the correct view to take? Because ~Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever~? (cherished is getting humbled now) I feel like a new-born Christian...starting all over again....

Whilst I know that Edersheim will help you to understand reality from a Hebraic rather than Greek perspective (and I cannot encourage you to understand reality from a Hebraic perspective highly enough) you need to remember that Edersheim's work is just commentary and not Divine Revelation.

God has always protected me and reminded me regarding the Bible only being Divine Revelation. I rarely use commentaries, actually. The Holy Spirit has been such a WONDERFUL Teacher for me. But I do love sitting at the feet of scholars, also. I am almost always hungry.

Oooooh (*wince*)! Some things are best kept to yourself. Amanda will be sore that she's just paid $20.00 for what you have just obtained for $13.59. Nevertheless, I am delighted that you have also invested in a copy (I bought another copy myself last Saturday for a friend of mine who has just recently returned to the Lord after being in a back-slidden state for over 20 years (and his testimony is that even in his rebellion, he knew that the Lord was still with Him, keeping an eye on him, even though he (my friend) didn't want to know the Lord for over 20 years). I cried for my friend when he abandoned his faith 20 years ago and now my heart is leaping for joy at my prodigal brother's return. And I bet you prayed for many a year for him :prayer:

Speaking of testimony, do you have one, somewhere, written out? I would be particularily interested in the development of your relationship with the Lord and how that was impressed upon you....I would also be interested in how you came to so highly value the Holiness of the LORD which seems so rare in many American believers....

No. I just don't like disenfranchizing those Israelites who are also 'Messianic Jews' but who don't believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah.

This absolutely blows me away! I always thought a Messianic Jew believed in Jesus of Nazareth being the Messiah. I have been a supporter of the Jews for many years now and just love the Jewish people. But I do not ever remember being told the above that you wrote!

During the first century, the Israelite disciples of Jesus of Nazareth were known as members of the Jewish sect of the Nazarenes (i.e. the followers of Jesus of Nazareth) as distinct from the Nazirites who were a particular order of Israelites who totally devoted themselves to YHWH (amongst whom were Samson and John the Baptizer).

Another wonderful tidbit of information. I always thought they were one and the same....

Thus I prefer to correctly designate those Israelites who are disciples of Jesus of Nazareth as members of the Jewish sect of the Nazarenes rather than just designating them according to the non-descript designation of 'Messianic Jews' (which has the unfair side effect of disenfranchizing all the other Israelites of their ligitimate Messianic aspirations).

Simonline.

Why, I thank you, so very much, for all your time spent teaching me! God so blesses me! I just love Him so much for giving me great teachers for so many years. Strange, I used to always long to talk to my Pastors so much about these things but they are always so busy...Well, God, certainly gives us the desire of our hearts..............

Please take your time responding. I know how time-consuming it is. lol, did you ever think you would be teaching two ladies from California

To use a Biblical phrase, I think that to desire to know exactly which language the Messiah spoke or which particular version of the Scriptural text He used when speaking with specific people is a case of 'straining at gnats'. There is no spiritual benefit in knowing specific details to this 'nth' degree. Your salvation will not be in the least bit enhanced simply because you happen to know whether the Messiah was right or left handed or got out of the right or left hand side of his bed in the mornings?!

I had a long reply posted and was about to send it to you and va la...with one wrong touch of the keyboard I lost it.

With regards to the above, I will reply in more detail, later, but, if what language He spoke is not important, then why?:

And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
John 19: 19,20

These things may not be important to a man who has grown up in the halls of Oxford, so to speak, but to a female who has grown up in the ocean, surf and sand of Southern California, perhaps, just perhaps, they are important...So I would gently ask you to ask the Lord, are you quenching the Holy Spirit by saying I am straining at a gnat?

However, the early apostles, particularly the apostle Paul, were extremely careful not to imbibe the alien culture and philosophy of the Helenistic world. They used the Greek language to communicate with the Grecian Jews and Gentiles but the concepts and ideas that they communicated, using the Greek language, were strictly Hebraic in nature (which is why the apostle Paul had to both 'create' and infuse with Hebraic meaning some new Greek expressions in order to communicate Judeo-Christian truth to the Grecian Jews and Gentiles using their own Greek language).

Fascinating and a new revelation to me. Thank you!

Hey, not just your churches, the churches on this side of the pond also need to hear it!

I have heard it is quite dark over there...Is it true?

The Scriptures are explicit (Rom.9-11; Eph.2:11-22 etc.) that The one and only true God is YHWH, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (later renamed (by YHWH) Israel), the only three men with whom the Eternal Name of YHWH will be forever associated, the Holy One of Israel. YHWH has communicated a) that He has taken, from out of all the nations (i.e. ethnic peoples) on Earth, a people to Himself, the Israelites. He has also commanded them to be holy and explicitly spelled out to them, on pain of death, exactly how and on what basis they are to approach Him. This is the only context from within which anyone can approach YHWH and live.
Any attempt to approach YHWH from within any other context or upon any other basis will be met with instantaneous death.

Do you believe this is still true? What about the Cross? I am not talking about cheap grace here but if, what you say is still true, I should be dead a long time ago. I grant you that the need for Holiness has been severely neglected but....?! Please explain....

By severing herself from her Jewish roots the Christian Church has effectively become a false religion.

And so, what do you believe happens to all those that have severed themselves from their Jewish roots? Especially if they were never taught otherwise?

Only as she allows herself to be grafted back into her Jewish root so that her orientation changes from pagan Gentile to holy Jewish will the Christian Church come back to life again. I am not saying that Gentile Christians must become proselytes to Judaism before they can come to living faith in the Jewish Messiah (Acts.15) any more than I am saying that Israelites must become Gentile Christians before they can come to living faith in their own Jewish Messiah (which is what the Church has wrongly taught for centuries), but they must recognize that the Messiah is fundametally and essentially Jewish in Nature and that Biblical Judaism is the truth.

And, so, what if they don't believe that? And what happens to those who have never been taught that? I personally believe Messiah is Jewish in Nature but I have never come to the conclusion that Biblical Judaism is the truth. It is not that I have disbelieved it...It is something i have never thought about until now and I have been a Christian for 30 years and read and studied the Scriptures for years....

I believe that YHWH is working to change the hearts of the Israelites toward Gentile Christians and is working to change the hearts of Gentile Christians toward His 'chosen' ('representative') Israelite people (especially those who coime to living faith in Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah) so that they come together as one.

This has been happening to me for years now due to God's most gracious leading. I love the Israeli people and have considered being a missionary in their country. The dream died for a few years but, due to recent circumstances, God may bring it alive to me again.

btw...would you be able to recommend an organization to support who works with the poor Israeli people or the victims of terror?

continued...

oh....is the enemy fighting me in replying to Simonline's posts.....

I gave up writing out my testimony a long time ago. I refuse to give people stale bread on which to feed.

Well, obviously you can do whatever you want. However, "stale bread"?!!! The people whose lives have touched mine and been used of God to change mine the most are those that are dead! I read about their relationships with God and a great longing was birthed in my heart....ah...Simonline...I think, one of the reasons God sent me to this forum was to challenge you regarding some of your opinions. cherished ducks and runs for cover............ :)

it has been my experience that YHWH has always been 'down-to-earth' in His dealings with me and has never come accross as being either religious or 'Holier-than-thou' with me (even though He has every right to relate to me as One who is infinitely 'Holier-than-I')).

I love that about Him!

That's just it. Gentile Christians can only think of the Messiah in terms of the Person of Jesus of Nazareth. They have no concept of the role of Messiah independent of a specific Person to fulfil that role (i.e. Jesus of Nazareth).

I think, for the most part, you are correct. But, I also think, for the most part, they (we) have not been taught otherwise....

Most Jews believe in the concept of a Messianic figure in the way that we Christians believe in the concept of the Anti-Christ. We know all about the Anti-Christ but we just don't know who is to fulfil that role. In the same way, with the exception of those Jews who are members of the sect of the Nazarenes, the Jews know all about the Christ (or Messiah), they just don't know who truly fulfills that role (and nor will they know until the appointed time when YHWH removes the spiritual veil that prevents them from understanding the Truth). Is it right that we deny the normative (non-Nazarenic) Jews the right to be considered Messianic simply because, in accordance with the will of YHWH, they do not yet know the true identity of the Messiah?!

No, it is not right...Was this done so that Gentiles might be grafted in during this time? I have always wondered about those Scriptures in Romans.....

My pleasure. My heart's desire is to see people like you getting excited about the Truth such that you want to rush out and share it with everyone (the same effect that the resurrected Messiah had on His disciples...Truth has that effect on people, you know ;)?!)

Yes, my dear brother...I do so know....Having the gift of teaching, myself and being a writer with my writings all over the internet, if you can convince me, and I get on fire, I will be one ablaze with this new-found (to me) truth....For when I get on fire, I get on fire.........

Simonline.

sigh...more trouble posting.........help, Lord!
