  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I saw this incredible, moving production in 1994 when it came to my area; Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson had "resurrected" their Jesus and Judas roles, repectively. I adore the 1973 movie, and adore the entire piece in general ... in fact, we're all going to see it when it comes to town next month. Perhaps JCS isn't entirely thelogically correct, but oh, dear, is it inspirational and moving!

THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST ROCKS ALL!!!

It owns the genre!!

Well, that's a matter of opinion. I was moved by The Passion but I was, and remain, far MORE moved by JCS/1973, which has twice now been a rejuvenator of my faith during some of the darkest days of my life. How can anyone not get chills up their spine as the triumphant, first notes of the title song ring out, and the bloodied, ragged Ted Neeley-as-Christ is suddenly glorified? Ted Neeley's performance as a tragic, conflicted, and believable Jesus is, in my opinion, far more powerful than Caviezel's. JCS is soaring, imaginative, heartbreaking, artistic. But to each their own. JCS was largely responsible for the "Jesus movement" of the early 70's, and perhaps, if there's such a movement now, The Passion can claim responsibility. Both have their merits, and flaws. But, I maintain that JCS was the better movie.:)

I liked JCS. I rented the movie about 10 years ago right around Good Friday. I found it a wonderfully human and modern portrayal of the Passion. I have always liked Gethsemane. It's probably the most powerful scene in the score. It gives you a different more human side of Jesus, without sacrificing his holiness. Of course my Pentecostal friend hated it and thought it was sacriligious. So I guess it isn't for those Christians who take the Bible literally and are offended by things that humanize Christ.

I don't much about this show, but I Do know that three of my friends went to go see it last night, and came back elated and full of awe for what they had seen. I also heard that my the non-christian who went was out of his seat and shouting with the play, and visably moved when it was over. Yah for Jesus!

I recently bought the original broadway cast recording of JCS and was initially moved by the score. But then I heard some things about the show being blasphemous... For some reason, I can't form my own opinion of it. I feel like God is telling me that I shouldn't listen to it, but I just love the music so much! Can somebody tell me their opinion. :help:

Is it blasphemous? I haven't seen it but am a little wary.

I personally dont think that the show is blasphemous... It does hint at a relationship between Mary Magdeline and Jesus.. however that is entirely at the disgression of the director.

The main character of the show is not Jesus as many people believe, it is in fact Judas, and tells the story from his perspective. :)

I actually liked the New Production--in style...Actors-no.

The Choice for Judas, was a bad one. The guy cannot sing compared to Carl Anderson or Ben Vereen. The Choice for Jesus, not bad--but could have been better. Mary--is ok.

I think the New Production was more theologically correct-as it gives hints that Jesus was resurrected at the end--that's my opinion---probably wasn't the intent. The Only problem I have with JCS is the bleak ending. My Lord and Savior conquered death, and hell--and JCS ends, making him look like just as a "man"

I personally don't see the Mary thing. Except for in the song, Strange Thing Mystifying.

I love the Music, and would love to play Judas--one of my dream roles!!!!

I have seen the show go one way or the other, depending upon the director. I did not like the movie, because all the bizarre anachronisms seemed to distract from the message. Although the libretto emphasizes the humanity of Christ and the natural motivations of all the characters, I don't think this is entirely bad. Done well, it can be a testament of faith, and I know a man who accepted Christ as a result of seeing a production of it. Like other Christian-oriented secular musicals, I think God can use it to bring an unbeliever to Christ; however, a believer probably ought to look elsewhere if he or she is seeking a closer walk with God.
