  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"The end times are coming, just like my book says!"
"You people claimed this for 2 millenia."
"Aha, you scoff, just like my book says! That means it is true and the end times are coming."

Notice any problem with that?

Humans are a bit stupid though. We know a lifetime is like a blink of an eye to God, yet we all expect it to happen in ours. We forget God has his own timing and we think a whole lot of time has passed, when really it hasn't been that long at all.

People been claiming it a lot longer than that. All of them sure of themselves, all of them wrong. A Brief History of the Apocalypse

It's almost as though... feeling yourself to be the last generation on Earth is a function of the human condition. Almost as though... maybe we're NOT the last generation after all? Maybe...maybe there's a sizable segment of EVERY generation that thinks their the last generation! Imagine?

Then it's really time the "the end is nigh!" crowd stopped saying it. Either discuss the subject in human time frames or divine time frames. Don't chop and change between them as convenient when your predictions turn out to be wrong. In rhetoric, that's called "moving the goal posts", and it doesn't really fool anyone.

To say it with the words of Gustav Mahler, replying to Brahms that after Brahms' death, there would be no more good music:

Look, there comes the last wave.

Matthew 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation, and
kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences,
and earthquakes, in divers places.

Matt 24:6-8 -- Jesus promises His apostles that they will have famines, wars and rumors concerning wars. This prophecy had special significance during that period of the great Pax Romana ("Roman Peace"), when the outbreak of these wars transpired: Claudius' Roman war with Britain/East Anglia; at least three Jewish insurrections against Rome prior to the 60s AD (one violently put down by Cuspius Fadus); the Jewish/Alexandrian revolt upon Caligula's death; Claudius declares martial law in Palestine after the Jewish insurrection at the death of Agrippa I; the Germanic tribes in present-day Belgium and Germany made perpetual trouble for the legions throughout the reign; a smoldering Balkan war was in continuous progress. As these conflagrations escalated, Rome started its own civil wars in 68-70 that nearly toppled the empire. As Tacitus writes, "Four princes [Galba, Otho, Vitellius, Domitian] killed by the sword; three civil wars, several foreign wars; and mostly raging at the same time. Favorable events in the East [the subjection of the Jews], unfortunate ones in the West. Illyria disturbed, Gaul uneasy; Britain conquered and soon relinquished; the nations of Sarmatia and Suevia rising against us; the Parthians excited by the deception of a pseudo-Nero." For more on wars of this time and false prophets, see: Josephus: Antiquities, 20:5:1-4; 20:8:5-10; Wars, 2:10:1; 2:13:4-7; 6:5:2. As for famines, Acts 11:28 records a worldwide famine. Josephus reports famines in Jerusalem in the 60s AD which killed hundreds of thousands during the Jewish War (AD 66-70). There were accounts of infanticide and cannibalism (as foretold in Deuteronomy 28:53,57) -- Jewish women cooked and ate their babies (Josephus; Wars 6:3:3-4; Wars 5:1:4). Concerning earthquakes, Seneca writes: "How often have cities in Asia, how often in Achaia, been laid low by a single shock of earthquake! How many towns in Smyrna, how many in Macedonia, have been swallowed up! How often has Paphos collapsed! Not infrequently are tidings brought to us of the utter destruction of entire cities" (Seneca Ad Lucilium Epistulae Morales, trans. Richard M. Gummere, vol. 2, 437). Josephus says of Jerusalem, "the city was besieged on both sides...there broke out a prodigious storm in the night, with the utmost violence, and very strong winds, with the largest showers of rain, with continued lightnings, terrible thunderings, and amazing concussions and bellowings of the earth, that was in an earthquake. These things were a manifest indication that some destruction was coming upon men, when the system of the world was put into this disorder; and any one would guess that these wonders foreshowed some grand calamities that were coming" (Wars, 4:4:5).

You are reading someone elses mail, not addressed to you.

The fall of Jerusalem occured in AD 70 when all preterists claim that all of these things happened.

But John the Revelator wrote the Rvevlation in AD 95 twenty five years later, the Revelation was written as a prophecy NOT as history.

Also Christ himself told us to watch, If your theory is actually true there would be nothing to watch for, and Christ would not have made that statement.

parousia70 You should do your own research and not just spout off the same falsehoods you hear from the false preachers that have a six month mail in correspondence course from some unacredited so called Bible school.

Here is a good start for you Dr. Ed Hindson the King is Coming.
Two earned THD'S. He's the best.

So far so Good....

But John the Revelator wrote the Rvevlation in AD 95 twenty five years later, the Revelation was written as a prophecy NOT as history.

Rather, St John wrote the Revelation prior to 70 AD, as the vast majority of published Biblical Scholars from the last 1900+ years attest.

All late date (95AD) Theorists are a significant minority, and rest their case solely on one, weak, single, solitary statement made by Irenaeus, who also falsely claimed Jesus lived to be 50 years old. Hardly a sturdy foundation upon which to build a Doctrine.

...But I thought we were discussing Matt 24:7? Why don't you take my commentary apart point by point and show our readers why it does not mean what I contend it means?

Also Christ himself told us to watch, If your theory is actually true there would be nothing to watch for, and Christ would not have made that statement.

If your theory is actually True, Then Jesus purposely misled his followers to "watch and Be ready" for an event He knew they would never live to see.

Such is untenable.

Are saying God can't tell time correctly?

One of his lesser failings, according to the bible, besides jealousy and wrathfullness.

You are still obviously not doing your own resaerch;

Thomas Ice
Today, the overwhelming consensus of scholarship believes that Revelation was written well after a.d. 70. Most have concluded that Revelation was written around a.d. 95, primarily because of
the statement by early church father Irenaeus (a.d. 120-202)
around a.d. 180.

You should refrain from making statements you can not back up with credible proof, as I have.

What's he waiting for?
Perhaps waiting for more Jews and/or Christians to apostatize?

2 Thess 2:3
No any ye should be deluding according to no yet one manner/way,
that if-ever no may be coming the apostasy first.
And may be being uncovered the Man of the Sin, the Son of the destruction.
