Jannes (Ee ya' nes)
Jannes is a resolute pacifist, a gifted healer and an enthusiastic encourager.
Physical Description:
Race: human, Gender: male, Ht: 5'10", Wt: 187, Age: 21, Hair: Black, Eyes: Blue, Skin: Tan
Jannes' body is muscular in a bulky fashion due to years of hard farm work. This is easy to see as he wears a loose, red, sleeveless tunic sashed with a length of blue material. He wears bright colors, a reflection of his sunny personality. Jannes wears no weapons.
Personality:
Jannes is good looking, but he doesn't seem to realize it. Women have said this only makes him more attractive, but they dislike the fact that he doesn't seem to return their feelings. The truth is that while Jannes is quite confident he is rather shy around women. He just seems to become nervous and sometimes trips over his tongue when speaking to them. Jannes is embarrassed about this and tries to hide this part of his personality, but most women see through that immediately while men rarely do. Otherwise, Jannes is laid back and easy going, quick to smile and eager to please. He is a generous, compassionate man, but also a strong man.
Background:
Jannes is shy around women because he has known very few of them. Orphaned while very young, Jannes came to live in a monastery and he grew up happily with the kind monks. However, there wre no women in the monastery and Jannes had only his memories of his dear mother to rely upon when forming opinions of the fairer sex. The few women he did meet while growing up were always sweet and cordial so Jannes has formed a rather idealized image of women.
In his years at the monastery Jannes grew strong working in the monastery's fields and stables. He also learned to cook and it was the opinion of the monks that he was quite skilled. The monks who took Jannes in were of the Order of the Open Hand. Hospitality and compassion are their bywords. Jannes learned healing techniques with the monks and found he had a talent for it. As Jannes neared puberty it was observed those he tended seemed to recover more quickly and the animals in his care were more robust, living longer than the average stock animal might. One night a grievously wounded soldier was brought to the brothers and, as if by instinct, Jannes placed his hands on the man. Miraculously, the soldier's wounds closed! Realizing he was endowed with mana, the monks ensured Jannes learned how to use his gift to full effect and for glory to God.
The Order of the Open Hand is named so due to their hospitality, but the open hand symbol also indicates they have taken oathes to do no harm to anyone. The pacifist order does not shun the martial arts entirely, however. In addition to developing spiritually and mentally the brothers also believe in developing physically. To hone quick reflexes, strong muscles and sturdy bones the order trains in a completely defensive form of Aikido called Open Hand.
If ever encountered with hostility Jannes will not strike back. Neither will he stand by and be beaten. Using his agility and training to avoid blows, Jannes sidesteps, jumps and rolls around attackers. He will continue to do so until an opportunity to escape presents itself or the attacker is exhausted.
Upon reaching the age of decision, 18, Jannes was invited to officially join the order. Although the monks had been his friends, teachers and parents for twelve years Jannes was eager to see the world. Footloose and fancy free, Jannes wanders the world. Although he has not taken the oath he lives by the values taught to him by the kindly monks who took him in as a young child. Jannes helps people where he can, earning room and board with healing, cooking and common chores. Wherever he goes Jannes tries to leave the place a little better than he found it. His mana has given him a gift for encouragement as well as his gift for healing.
