• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I've got a PhD position!

Hehe, the thing I consistently heard (including coming from my own mouth during my write up) was "If I was given the choice again I would have never done a Ph.D".

But dont let me get you down, most of the time it's great and finally finishing after going through the viva is the best feeling ever. It's also nice to get your name on a few publications.
Oh, I know. A few friends of mine say exactly the same thing.

I haven't posted frequently here lately because I had a lot of other things on my mind. One of which was securing a PhD-position somewhere. And now that worked out! So because people here are interested in science, I thought I'd celebrate here.

That's great Tom, maybe you could help me with something. My cell phone is a major pain in my neck, think that might have something to do with the electromagnetic field?

Seriously though, congratulations and the best of luck to you.

is a major pain in your neck or causes? If the first, maybe it's the guy on the other end of the line :p. (sorry, puns don't always come over on the screen).

If you really get neck pain when calling, this probably is more related to how you hold your mobile phone when using it.

Seriously though, congratulations and the best of luck to you.
Thanks!

Congratulations! I just finished my bachelor's in biology in December and I'm currently awaiting for responses from graduate schools I've applied to go to in the fall. I've decided on doing a Master's first as kind of a safety net. Good luck on your PhD!

Congrats but you could have gotten the PhD in about 30 minutes like Kent Hovind. All you need is a credit card.
But currently I don't have any money. And in the Netherlands, a PhD is a paid position. Granted, not paid very well, but paid nonetheless.

But good idea on the other hand, I'll buy myself some more PhD titles during the course of my research :D

In my physics PhD program at Yale, every year the second year students would host the incoming class at a "Misery Loves Company" party. I found it pretty grim until I got through qualifying exams, and then mostly fun until the actual thesis writing, which was a little stressful.

Congratulations.

Interesting...Your funding structure seems quite different to here then.
It is. The whole structure is different. It really is a job here, only with courses build in and you working a lot harder than in most jobs for less pay than you would get if you'd get a regular job at the same level. There are propositions at this point to make the system more like the Anglosaxon one, with which I vehemently disagree.

I liked our system here. You got a nice grant, which was comparable to a decent salary (taking the lack of tax into account) and a nice budget for purchasing consumables/travel expenses.
