• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

um...hi everyone.

I have a few questions....so if some of you could give me answers, I'd be really thankful.

um....I've never really smoked....but I LOVE the smell of smoke and I like the feel of it in my lungs.

So is this the start of becoming a smoker?

And if so, is there anyway I can make it stop?

I'm REALLY wanting to try smoking.....but I don't know how my parents would take it....I'm really in a bind here....

How do I control my urges?

Thanks guys,

Sqiz^_^

...if the Surgeon General's warning isn't enough, you could do a Google Search on 'cancer'. but, then, the Bible is full of warnings too, and few there be that heed them. Fire Fighters will wear breathing apparatus while fighting fires to protect them from inhaling 'smoke'. then after the fire, they will take it off so they can have a 'smoke'. silly, but there you are. bottom line, you're gonna do what you desire. but be of good cheer, there are consequences.

A conversation was held at work yesterday about those who smoke... A test was done on twins - one smoked, other didn't - and the non-smoker looked a lot younger and prettier than the other. And generally smokers look older and not as nice looking supposedly.

And don't fool yourself into thinking you'll be able to quit.. just read the posts here and see if you want to get into this addiction.

Hey Mate!

Well you sort of have three questions here so I will answer all of them to the best of my ability.

At the moment you are doing what they call passive smoking. This is more dangerous than actually smoking and is addictive just like smoking. You feel the effects of the chemicals in your lungs and that is why you enjoy so much as you are getting a little buzz out of it. It is in no way healthy for you and I am not surprised that you want to take on actual smoking from it. You are as they say 'addicted' to passive smoking.

Second question - the only way to stop is by not doing it. Passive smoking is diagnosed as being a cheif concern in the development of asthma and other lung related diseases in children. It has the same effect on the lungs as smoking so the best way to get out of it is avoid it. There is no other way out of it. As you are not an actual smoker you have to relly on the smoke of others so I suggest either not socialising with smokers of just giving them space when they choose to smoke if avoidance is too difficult.

Thirdly if you want to control your urges and resist temptation do what we all do - think about something else. Usually they say have a glass of water, go for a walk (exercise is supposed to be wonderful to help you quit), take up a hobby, read a book, clean your house, talk to your friends or parents about nothing and everything, whatever it takes to make you stop thinking about. Go out and do something that is fun that won't damage your lungs and make you sick later in life. Cravings last for only about 5 minutes at most so as you spend less and less time around smoke the cravings will get shorter and you will be able to start to overcome them without doing to much other than thinking about what you want to do on the weekend or if there is a movie you really would like to see.

Many people here are in the processes of either trying to quit or thinking of quitting or recently have quit. I quit about a year and 5 months ago. I still get the odd craving but it passes. Like every one here we would to encourage you to not even think about taking up smoking. If I could go back I would tell myself not to but then I never listened to those who tried to tell me then so I guess it wouldn't change much! You seem smart enough to actually ask the questions before hand so well done! I am sure that you will make a wise decision about this and I hope that this advice reaches you and gives you some help.

Blessings, Evie
