  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've read Ivanhoe and loved it. It's a classic in which myth has been woven through history, the way Dumas also does it. I loved the book even more than the movie. *L*
Is it easy to read? One thing I can't stand is trying to understand what an author is trying to say. If the writing is anything like Beowulf, I'll just read the cliff notes.

I love Dumas faerieeva. I was not very happy with the last Three Musketeers film at all though.

On Ivanhoe, its a spirited adventure, quite exciting.

But, if you want a great story like it, read Asterix and Obelix. :p

I was wondering have any of you read Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott or any of Sigrid Undset's books. I was told by somebody yesterday that they are worth a read.

I have read Ivanhoe and it's a wonderful and wellwrit book. I have also several times read the trilogy "Kristin Lavransdatter" by Sigrid Undset. She's describing a fascinating period of Norway's history when Norway was still a Catholic country (as the rest of Christianity at that time was).

Sigrid Undset converted to Catholicism as an adult. You will not regret reading her books.

*laughs* Anyone who loves Asterix and Obelix has great taste! "Weird guys those romans"
PP: what movie do you speak of? There are several, I believe I will confess to having enjoyed 'the man in the iron masque', despite the horrendous storyline and film making flaws in it. (And no... I never had a crush on Dicaprio. *L*)

Ahum.. back to your question, Dreamtheater. I found it extremely easy to read. It's an adventure novel and lovely written. Some of the language may be a bit outdated, depending on which version you read, but I've read it in English, and that's not my mother tongue.

The latest version of the Three Musketeers, not the Sting, Bryan Adams, and Rod Stewart theme song one.

You know, "The Man in the Iron Mask" is my favourite classic and I thought they didn't do such a good job in it. The torture and solitude was not portrayed the way I would have liked.

P2bc, another classic is Tin Tin.

The three books of the trilogy are "The Wreath," "The Wife," and "The Cross," correct?

Yes, that's correct. And each book can be read separately, but you get the fullness of the story by reading them all. My favorite is the "Wreath". It's a beautiful lovestory.

Tintin, by Belgian artist Hergé, I have them all! I miss one or two of the newest Asterixes.

Latest version? Did I miss a version? The Rod Steward theme song one is the one with Chris O Donnel and Charlie Sheen, right? I thought it a charming movie, but not one that did justice to the book.
Man in the Iron Mask, I've only seen the modern version with Gabriel Byrne as d'Artagnan, Jeremy Irons as Aramis, Gerard Depardieu as Porthos and John Malkovich as Athos. Dicaprio played Louis... he's a good actor, but his horrible accent just... ruined the character for me.
The movie had a great pace and I love it, but it's a sort of guilty, sinful love, because it hasn't been made very well. Loads of movie making errors.

Ivanhoe is a great book, if you enjoy the medieval romance genre. Be warned, however, that the book was written in the early 19th century, and its portrayal of Jews is not what I would call...enlightened. This could be considered a plus, however, since unlike most of the stuff being read in schools today, it's not politically correct and it is true to the mores of the time.
