Ok, so this will be my fourth baby, my fourth c-section. We were planning for me to get a tuble ligation, but now I'm not so sure. Though I don't necessarily plan on having another baby, I don't like the idea of making it permanent. We mentioned this to the doctor and he talked to us about an IUD. He says it gives up to 10 years of protection and is reversable, if we decide we want to start trying for a baby again in a couple years we could have it taken out and start trying the next day. My question is, does anyone here have experience with an IUD? Good or bad, would you mind sharing about what you know about it?

An IUD is considered an abortificant as it changes the lining of the uterus so that a fertilized egg can't implant. It wouldn't be an option for those who feel strongly about chemical birth control and abortion. Usually most women end up with heavier periods and cramps than before. From what I understand, this tends to lighten up the longer you have the IUD.

I had one about 25 yrs ago for about 3 months. I didn't know about the abortificant aspect of it, nor the heavier periods. I had never had cramps in my life before I got the IUD... so with all that put together I felt very convicted not to have it, and had the GYN take it out (he wasn't happy with me, but it wasn't his body lol).

Also, something else to consider if you're going to breastfeed, is that Any chemical based birth control is going to affect your milk supply and leech hormones/chemicals into your milk. The mini-pill is considered the "safest" of the chemical birth controls, while moms are typically encouraged to use barrier forms of birth control while breastfeeding.

Well, what the doctor and brochure said about IUD's is that it doesn't have any hormones, it's copper and emits less copper per day then you eat in food daily so it's safe for your body. He said that it prevents the sperm and egg from connecting.

I am interested in how it's effected women using it.

I've never used it. If I wanted long term birth control I would probably prefer using the implant thing that goes in your arm. I have friends who have this and it works for them.

My MIL had one of these when she was first married to my FIL. Her son, my DH implanted though she had the IUD, which was not supposed to happen... and it is amazing he was born without any complications.

Due to how things progressed with him and due to issues after the IUD, she was unable to have other children.

Most doctors and even Planned Parenthood say that it prevents an egg and sperm from meeting, but then quote the med-insert that says something along the lines of:

"The ParaGard IUD can be used as emergency birth control, to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. It can reduce the risk of pregnancy by 99.9 percent if inserted within 120 hours (five days) after unprotected intercourse."

and

"Contact your doctor if you have any of these symptoms..... [insert various symptoms here], or think that you have become pregnant"


How does that work, if supposedly it isn't an abortificant or prevents ovulation to begin with?

Also, it can cause miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, or early labor/delivery just by being in IF you become pregnant.

After having been on BCP for other reasons prior to getting married, I had to do the research on each of them for the benefits and shortfalls, and I gotta agree with Jan. Most are aborificants, and all hormonalBirth control devicesleech into your breastmilk.... not exactly good, and it does affect a child's development.

NFP + barriers would be better.

I was told it isn't a hormone releasing birth control and if I chose to have it removed I could start trying the next day.

He said that it wouldn't effect breast feeding being how it isn't a hormonal birthcontrol method.

HB~ IMO you should get online and read the information on the IUD yourself. Only you are going to be able to make the decision anyway, kwim?

As I understand it there are both hormonal IUDs and copper IUDs without hormones. Someone on my other message board had a copper IUD and shes pregnant now with the IUD still inside. Personally worry about them accidently poking it in the wrong spot. Also I hear it is very uncomfortable with the poking. Anyway I agree you should google a bit.

I used one for 13 years after my second son was born. I never had any problems. My periods were normal without any problems with cramping other than the first day of the period, which was my normal response. I loved never having to think about birth control, never had to take a pill, didn't have to fiddle with a diaphragm. It was GREAT for me.

My doctor said that if I were to end up pregnant to call him and he'll have to see me within 24 hours to take it out and do an ultrasound to see where the egg attached. I wonder why that person still has their's in.

Do you know where they stick this? From my understanding he would be reaching past the baby to take it out if it were in the same position. That sounds nuts to me... very dangerous. They can't always find it either in pregnant women. Google it!

Wow that's a really scary thought - I don't think I would be happy with a doctor doing that to me, It's probably safer leaving it there.

Yikes. I would NOT be comfortable with this AT ALL.
