Jesus had been healing people. Some scribes came along and said that Jesus had the ability to heal people because he was possessed by the devil - that he had an "unclean spirit". Mark 3. Jesus didn't have an unclean spirit - he had the HOLY SPIRIT! These men had attributed to the devil what was really God's power. They showed COMPLETE contempt to the God they claimed to serve and taught that Jesus was a devil. They believed it in their hearts and spoke it to the people. Do you believe that Jesus is a devil - do you actually believe this in your heart? Do you believe in your heart that the Holy Spirit is a devil? Do you speak this and teach it to others? If not, then you have NOT committed anything unpardonable. Ultimately, the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the rejection of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
This is exactly right. When Jesus spoke of a sin that would not be forgiven, it was because of people who had seen miracles performed by Jesus right in front of them and said that Jesus's miraculous power was from the devil. They continued to determinedly refuse to believe in him despite seeing his miracles and having every reason and proof to believe.
I used to worry about this, as well, after reading the verse. I thought, "What if I had blasphemed against the holy spirit? Now nothing I do is of any good because I've committed the unforgivable sin." If you're worried that you committed this sin, then you haven't. It's a continued, determined attitude of unbelief and rejection of God despite clear signs of his love and power. It's not just a one-time or temporary slip in which you have bad thoughts or say bad things about Got.
