He sat at a table with His 12 closest friends
Knowing that one would betray Him
And one would deny Him.
And one would deny Him.
Yet He didn't try to stop either one, just told what they'd do
And told his traitor to do had to be done
Then He went to the garden to pray
Such a gloomy night it was for Him
He asked his deciples to keep watch
But three times they fell asleep as He prayed
Then an angry mob came to take Him away.
His betrayer with a kiss sealed His fate
And they grabbed Him and led Him to where his haters were waiting
He watched Peter deny him three times
Then He heard the rooster crow twice
It was the way He knew the dreaded denial would be
While with the high priests, this Man was mocked
He was beaten and accused of blasphemy
He listened as people lied about Him
While saying it was He that lied
Then He went to face Pilate
A ruthless ruler, I've heard
He listened to the crowd yell "CRUCIFY!"
He heard Pilate ask who should be set free
He heard the angry crowd demand Barabbas
Such a man of cruel deeds
The one who deserved what was happening
He was then lead away to be scourged
The instrument meant to do nothing but
Rip flesh and cause such terrible pain
Then He was put in a fancy robe
And a crown of thorns was put on him
He now was so weak, tortured, and bloody
That He resembled the living dead
Strips of flesh hanging off where the whip had landed
They gave Him His cross to start the journey to Calvary
But He could not carry it in his suffering and weakness
So He watched as another man was forced to help
Then at Calvary, they laid Him on the cross
They put torturous naile through His hands
And then did the same with His feet
They raised His cross between two criminals
Two who got what they deserved
One mocked Him with the others
The other repented of his sin
While on the cross He struggled just to breathe
Having to raise Himself up on the nails just to inhale
Having to watch as He was mocked by the crowd
Having to watch as His horrified mother stood by
Having to watch as His Father turned away
Finally He called "It is finished!"
His suffering was drawing to an end
He took His last breath and gave up his spirit
When I think of this Man
And what He went through
I can never forget one very important thing
It should not have been Him who suffered like that
No, it should definitely not have been Him
I can't help but remember as I think of the cross
The one hanging there should have been me
Then He went to the garden to pray
