Uummmm.....Krystal Meyers?....I think.....Kinda Scary

Krystal Meyers is the daughter of Rick Meyers who wrote E-sword. I have talked to Rick a few times. E-sword is an awesome Bible program if you have not heard about it. I have her CD and she's a very talented young lady. The reason people may think she sounds like a little like a "Christian Avril Lavigne" is before she has the same producer. It may not be some people's favorite style of music but remember these are our brothers and sisters in Christ so before you make an insulting comments remember God takes every word we type into account.

I wouldn't consider Third Day to be grunge...they are southern rock...name one southern rock band in CCM other than Third Day. The only time they were grunge is Conspiracy Number 5 and that was back when it was the trend unlike now.

well, yeah. i didn't mean third day was grunge.

Yup. And I wouldn't consider Creed to be grunge. Or pseudo-grunge. They were more "cr@p-tastic!" :)

oh c'mon, creed totally wanted to be pearl jam. thus, pseudo-grunge (pseudo means false, you know!). i can also totally agree with your description though. :D

Most bands in secular music are not original either though. ;)

Perhaps not so much in the mainstream, but there are some pretty innovative artists in the Indie/Underground scene.

As in the Christian Indie market. The point is I have worked for secular record companies and that's all I listened to for 24 years. For some reason people think Christian bands just copy secular bands and that's far from the truth. There are original bands and nonoriginals. It's like that for both Christian or secular. Also all because a band sounds like another band isn't always a bad thing and it certainly doesn't mean the band isn't talented.

I can think of several reasons why mainstream bands, secular or Christian, often don't sound original.

1. Same producers are producing several different bands.

2. Record labels want to go with what will sell and they sometimes are scared to try "something new".

3. Bands grow up listening to certain groups and enjoy making music like it.

There isn't really a whole lot of music in the Christian Indie market. Most Christians who are really doing something innovative realize that the whole false dichotemy between sacred and secular is silly and just stick to the regular Indie market rather than specifically targeting the Christian sub-culture. I define a Christian band as a band that is marketed toward Christians, so I would say that people like Sufjan Stevens and Pedro the Lion aren't really "Christian" bands, but rather Christians who understand the role of their faith in their art.

Good point. And, for some reason, my baby sister's favorite band comes to mind, too: Dakota Motor Co.

Another solid point. One producer who comes to mind is Robert John "Mutt" Lange. Everybody he produces sounds the same...heh-heh...although he doesn't produce CCM, so, I guess this post is in error... :sorry:

It's not in error. I think that's sort of the point. Christians and non-christian bands alike can be derivative. However, I think that because Christians are representing God, the ultimate Creator, they would take their role as artists seriously and strive to do something original. I think they should be held to a higher standard than the mainstream secular artists who sound alike, because those artists aren't claiming to represent someone, much less the Creator of the universe.

i can understand what you're saying but i just bought 4 cds from a christian book store and i love them. If anyone wants to know they were Skillet, Kutless, and Day of Fire. I recommend them to all the rockers out there.

Skillet is a band that changes with trends.

Grunge Skillet:

Nu-metal Skillet:

Industrial Skillet:

Gothic Skillet:

Pop Rock Skillet:

They aren't about trying to be innovative or original; they are jumping onto whatever new bandwagon comes along.

And Kutless is like a terrible, terrible medley of Creed and Nickelback and every other band that never should have existed to begin with. If you like it, that's great; to each his own. But don't try and tell people that this stuff is new and original. That would be lying. Lying makes baby Jesus cry.

Um, I tried to like Skillet. I really did. A buddy of mine drums for a band that toured with Skillet for a few months, and I hung out with them for an evening. Nice people. But, John Cooper's voice is the equivalent of fingernails on a chalkboard...

Kutless: Hmm. In the words of American Idol Judge Randy Jackson: "It's just aahiight for me, man. Just aahiight." They're not terrible, but...well, they're not great, either. They're lost in that wasteland of cookie-cutter-sound-alike bands...

Day of Fire: Better than Kutless... ;)
