I would have far more respect for Israel as a secular liberal democracy (in a region with precious few of those) if they genuinely worked toward a peaceful and democratic Palestinian state. The current apartheid state is horrible for the Palestinians, and explains why a lot of terrorism is created.

I wish we could just remove religion from the equation. There would still be family, ethnic, and historical political disputes, but people would probably act a lot more reasonable if there was no "Jews have a God-given right to this land" or "We must kill the infidels and drive the Jews into the sea" or Americans like Hagee going "Christians must stand for Israel to bring about the End-Times".

Yes. The notion that it is a Gods given land to the "chosen people" makes me sick.
Zionism and Nazism have alot in common.
I can sort of understand the idea that after 2000 years of persecution from practically everyone, the Holocaust was just the final straw that convinced Jews that they were not safe under gentile governments. But I still don't like the idea of a state based on race/ethnicity, and there's no excuse for the current treatment of Palestinians.

I do like that they have a pretty well-functioning democracy (for non-Palestinians) and an extremely good system of science and education, though. I can't identify with either side more than the other, because the vast majority of both sides are normal people just trying to live their daily lives.
