  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Isn't it ironic that a Catholic (Mel Gibson) is being accused of giving an inaccurate picture of Jews during the Passion. Isn't it ironic that the very medium he is using has been used for the last 40 years to give the most distorted and unbalance view of the Catholic Church.

Show me one Hollywood movie that gives an accurate portrayal of a Catholic priest or nun and I will give you 20 that portray them as sadistic, perverted and down right evil.

This is the view from Hollywood.

Why no backlash?

Why no contraversy?

Why not a sound from the media?

We as Catholic have had to deal with the effects of such a distorted view of Catholicism.

Very nice article. I wish that he had discussed more films, such as Priest to show that thsi Catholic bashing has been going on for much longer than just the past few years.
I guess the film industry still hasn't gotten over the fact that Catholic priests were portrayed in a fairly good light in The Exorcist. ;)

In Gibson's interview on EWTN last month, Mel mentioned that a recent film "The Gospel of John" hasn't received such negativity from detractors. Mel says his film receives all this because it is personal against him.

I think the reason is because a Catholic has made this film.
That Catholic's name didn't have to be Mel Gibson.

That was one gutsy article.

I don't agree however that it is because the director is a Catholic, because if a Protestant actor were to make a true depiction of Christ, and he were A list like Mel, the same attacks would ensue. After all, someone like Kirk Cameron is old news, but let's say Tom Cruise converted to a Baptist denomination, he would probably be attacked just the same.

Can we forget how many Protestants get attacked in films? Not to say we don't have more attacks on our side, but remember all the evangelical characters in films through the years?

There has been a definite swing in Hollywood over the past couple of generations. There were plenty of pro-Catholic movies "way back when". For instance "The Bells of Saint Mary's" (starring Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman) comes to mind.

I disagree. Gibson is a major player in Hollywood, just look at the movies he has been in. He propelled two major movies (Mad Max and Lethal Weapon) into successful multi-movie series and has been involved in a number of other blockbuster films as well. That he suddenly turned into a "holy roller" initially got the interest of the media, and it never let up. If you or I had come up with this movie, it would have flown under the radar the entire time because we're Hollywood no-bodies.

This is one reason why I am Catholic. Satan will send most of his forces to attack his greatest threat.

The Catholic Church will always be picked on.

I opened my testimony with the following statements:

In this nasty, godless, secular, anti-Christian world in which we live, I am amazed at one thing that everybody, regardless of race, colour, or creed, have in common: hatred of the Catholic Church!!!

Jehovah’s Witnesses hate her. Mormons hate her. The media hate her. Atheists hate her. Muslims hate her. “Evangelical” Fundamentalist Protestants hate her.

Satanists of course hate her. They hate her more than they do other Christians. So much so, that their “Black Mass” is a total mockery of the Catholic Mass. Satanists have for centuries broken into the tabernacles of Catholic Church altars in order to steal the Communion hosts, in order to defile them in rebellion to Jesus Christ. For the Catholic Church teaches, as the Bible and Church fathers teach, that that is truly the flesh of Jesus Christ. (More on this later.) Their Black Mass is a complete mockery of the Catholic Mass. Hmmmm…..

I find it interesting that all these opposing, diverse factions seem to loathe the Catholic Church with equal zeal and fervor. Very fascinating how even those who call themselves Christian are steadily trying to debunk her teachings, and draw her members away into their denominations (of which they have over 28,000 conflicting factions to choose from, according to the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church!)

It appears the whole world hates the Catholic Church!!!

Jesus told his disciples: “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” (John 15:18-19).

In light of this evidence, it became clearer and clearer to me that the Catholic Church MUST be the TRUE Church of God, established by Jesus, and preserved by the Holy Spirit

The same reason why a black cop and arrest a white kid with probable cause and no one cares and a white cop can arrest a black kid with probable cause and everyone screams "RACE!".

Amen! This phenomenon has always interested me, and finally led me away from the two other "rival" churches in my heart. :priest:
