  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My favorite text is Isaiah 40:31:

Isa 40:31 "But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."

I would be interested to hear what others see in this verse.

I don't think it is in the passive sense. It's kind of like a waitress...we say how she "waits on tables;" and this usually means she is really moving, and very busy serving customers.

"Waiting" on God is similar. We do not sit in a chair and wait for Him to do all kinds of stuff to get us moving and feeling strong and vital.

Getting busy and doing something for Him, in blessing or serving others, will "renew our strength." :amen:

I wonder. Has anyone here ever seen an Eagle "mount up" with his wings? How would what you saw correlate with this verse?

Grace and peace unto all from God and from the Lord Jesus Christ!

Isaiah 40:31 is prophetic about those who by godliness shall wait upon the LORD (God).

The face of godliness is the face of an eagle.

As eagles easily climb atop mountains because of sheer strength of wings, so shall those who by godliness wait upon the LORD soar to the mountain top (dwelling place of God and pinnacle of strength/authority) with the wings of godliness.

In godliness, there is no weakness (infirmities) caused by nuturing desires for things of the world (thorns). Such thorns are overcome by grace through faith and by perfect love that prepares for godliness.

There is much to learn about all six wings of godliness... when the proper foundation is laid through the teaching of other things that lead up to godliness.

I like this verse also. :)

The Hebrew word for "renew"=change, to change for the better. Compare also Lev. 27:10

mount up.........run.........walk- a figure of speech is used here, called Catabasis, to call attention (by application) to the progress of experience in grace. At first we fly (cp. Paul, 2 Cor. 11:5, 12:11), then we run (cp. Paul, Eph. 3:8), then we walk (cp. Paul, 1 Tim. 1:16)

And many who fly, think they walk.;)

I like the part of your comment re "change for the better."

Here is Lev.27:10-

Lev 27:10 He shall not alter it, nor change it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good: and if he shall at all change beast for beast, then it and the exchange thereof shall be holy.

Can you tell me, please, what connection you see with this verse, and "change for the better," or "renew?"

The connection is God, who renews all things. It's a fact about God.
Rev 21:5
And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

In the Lev. verse, it didn't matter if what was changed was bad for good or good for bad, God accepted both as holy.:holy:

Love takes the good with the bad, and makes it "all good".
We read many times in Genesis that all of creation is "good".

Gen 1:31
And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, [it was] very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

OK. Now I get it! Some days I am a bit slow - thanks for the explanation. What you say here makes sense - "All things work out for good, to them who love Jesus..." (Rom.8:28). :)

It's about a sense of constantly relying on God. Flying and running require bursts of energy and we don't do those things all the time. However, we do constantly walk, which requires an always renewable source of energy (grace), which can only come from God.

Great verse. See Third Day's "Eagles" song if you like this verse and like music.

My pain and problems keep me chained
And my troubled heart makes me weak
I'll wait for You to comfort me
And in You I know I'll find my strength

I will soar on the wings of eagles
I will learn to fly high above this world
And I will soar on the wings of eagles
I will learn to fly
I will learn to fly high above this world

I tremble with this heavy weight
And I'm buried underneath my grief
I'll run to You and not grow faint

And I'll lay my burdens at Your feet

I will soar on the wings of eagles
I will learn to fly high above this world
And I will soar on the wings of eagles
I will learn to fly
I will learn to fly high above this world
