  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is Writing Soothing?

Hey guys, I have been a writer for quite sometime now, before I even reached 10 I was writing short stories for friends and family. Well, now that I am older, I find that writing stories or writing about anything is very soothing and relaxing. I just recently learned that writing about your own life can be very soothing as well. I am going through some struggles right now, and I am writing about when these struggles began nearly 10 years ago and all the events surrounding it. It is definitely helping me to understand my struggle a lot more by going that far back.

I have decided to make this story into a short novel on my life. I am only 21 now, and so there isn't much to write about as I am picking up on my life when I am 14.... I have decided to create a fictional character and write about their life after 21 as though the time before they were 21 is them, if that makes any sense... so the first part of the novel will be a true story, and the last part of the novel will be fictional. It should be interesting. The title I chose for the story is The Black Letters sort of meaning the forbidden letters.... so does anyone else find writing to be relaxing and soothing?

Very much so. It seems to be such a release to be able to put into words all the deep emotional feelings that I've experienced. Although, I have yet to write stories, I love writing poetry. It has helped me to deal with many things, both good and bad, that have happened in my life. :)

Soothing? yeah sometimes. I think better in writing so it can help me sort out my feelings on certain issues.

But I also find that writing can be very stressful as well, and sometimes it is both soothing and stressful at the same time. Am I making any sense?

I love to write - anything. I like writing fictional stories and stories from my own life. I also like writing poetry.

The only things I ever really stressed about writing were papers for school (and even those were sometimes not so bad) and my thesis (which was almost 100 pages).

I'm glad you find joy in writing. Keep it up.

Hah! Writing is not stressful at all, expecially if you have an active imagination. It's finding the time to write that is stressful, and the place, which is almost never an issue. I find writing soothing, relaxing, and fun to do. I have posted a sample or two of my works, and I got reviews on em, and they turned out to have mistakes, but I fixed em in like 5 minutes. So it might be just me, or it might not, but writing is far from stressful.

It really depends upon the person. When I want to release certain feelings I have or ideas, I just begin writing in free verse or prose from a first person pov. For some, to share their feelings is hard. I get into that mode alot of the times I want to write. I just get to a point where I don't want to acknowledge my feelings. Or, I am just so frustrated and confused, when I begin to write, the words I write don't convey what I meaning to say or they say exactly what I feeling and I just get stressed out. Writing is very emotional for me. That's why I always prefer to use a pen and pencil, as oppose to a computer. It just seems to flow better.

writing is stressful and annoying and the worse feeling is when you have an idea but can translate it into words or drama the way you want to. most of the times i hate writing. i only do it because i kinda have to. i suck at making music, poetry, sports, singing....so i have to write. i don't find writing enjoyable at all. at least for now. tomorrow i might think other wise. and screw punctuaction and spelling too. and plots are overrated too.

and i don't understand the "creative urge". i sorta don't like it. i feel compelled to write, to create something, and i know i have the talent. anyways i still don't like it for some reason. i dunno. i don't get it myself. and right now i hate anything related with art.

but sleeping is definitely soothing. :)

:D Writing soothes me, and so does reading. Well... reading soothes if it is well-written. My vocation has always revolved around writing, and grading stacks of essay papers could certainly be stressful at times. The best writing is when I do not have to defend a view or belief. I can express what I think, how I see (with my eyes) the beauty of something. I thank God for the ability to put my thoughts and experiences into words. Jesus is my favorite topic!

I like writing because when you write you have no limits, except those you place on yourself, and no problems, except those you create...provided the computer doesn't crash or anything. At least that's what it's like with my writing. Very very very soothing.

I pity people who don't like to write, they don't know what they're missing. Writing is a great way to organize thoughts, ideas, and emotions.

Ok, this might sound kinda stupid, but I have my main storyline I work on, but I also write little side or back stories with my characters. For example, I feel really mad about something and one of my characters gets into an argument with another character. It serves two purposes. 1) I get my emotions out (this is very useful with rage) 2) I get to learn more about my characters. Kinda crazy, I know.
