There is nothing wrong with wine, or other God given things, to make the heart merry. The Bible condemns excess and drunkenness not enjoyment of what He has given us.
I was thinking long this line James mentions. Key is has God given it to you?
God did not approve of what the people were wanting so they did not get what they asked from Him.
Asking for stuff just to enjoy it seems to me to not be approved by God. I don't equate asking for 'pleasures' with murder. James makes a distinction there too. God did not approve of either.
My experience through life is I attempt to go after some things I think I will like, and if I obtain them, then God has not disapproved me getting them. But I also don't seek after worldly opulence, gold etc...any more by using God, as far as I am aware!
I used to really enjoy stock trading and for a time was very good at it, and finally God told me it was not right to ask of Him for my stocks to go up, sort of like God was not in the business of catering to my whims and desires to entertain me. That was a very painful lesson.
My big 'pleasure' purchase was a 37 foot sedan cruiser boat, which I do not need, but I do enjoy. It is also an expense and time burden, but God has enabled me to continue to use it.
I have no problem with people consuming some alcohol, it is interesting that alcohol can be a very dangerous drug, but generally accepted, while marijuana with THC is disapproved of, which is less dangerous, it is a schedule 1 drug. It was considered a gateway drug to heroin at one time. Kratom is very mild, alcohol is much more dangerous, yet the FDA wants it banned.
My own attitude towards marijuana has relaxed.
James 4:2-3 New King James Version (NKJV)
2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.
3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
