  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Is this wrong???

ok...I am concerned about something in a story I'm writing, and I would like some help. In my story, there are several major characters who are mages, and they work with magic. A friend of mine suggested that perhaps, as a Christian, I should not be writing about such things. I feel that it is ok, beause, although my characters are human, the story takes place in a fantasy world, and therefore it is ok to have characters using magic and other things. What do you think? I'm really not sure about this anymore.

In a fantasy story, I'd say it'd depend on what your magic is used for. If it's just plain magic spells, such as Harry Potter I would be against it. I see no truths in Harry Potter. However, I have read several other books that magic is used, something like angels would use it, to do miracles by a greater power.

Stuff like lightning, fire, ice, healing, that kind of stuff, I see no problem with, since its imagianary. The REAL sorcery, like divining, consulting the dead, and stuff that involves souls, I am more leery about. It really depends, IMO, on what you are doing.

As long as you do not let the magic get to your head, or practice it (assuming it's not miracle work, or God related). Especially if it's a Medieval story. I am writing a fanfic on a medieval game, and even started an RPG on it. Like I said, as long as it doesn't influence anyone about the wrong thing or get into your head that it might be possible (again, with the assuming), you'll be alright. And if you are REALLY stuck on it, pray, it's the best solution.

So long as its fiction and you're not promoting or enacting malice against others with your writing, then its good. Harry Potter is an example of this. So don't worry if people tell you its wrong, so long as you're not promoting witchcraft or malice against other people in real life.

It's just not a good story without satanic rituals, witchcraft and various recipes for cooking babies... :)

Seriously, though, most witches are really annoying.
Real ones, or the fictional, highly powerful, evil spell-casting variety?

Anyway, yes, keep the magic. And I would add that it would even be acceptable to include realistic magic so long as you're not involved yourself and show that it is wrong and harmful. After all, most Christians don't object to Screwtape Letters, and that's written in first person as a demon.

It all depends on how you approach things.
