Good translation, but in this case, bad idea.Looking at the English equivalent in the KJV doesn't transmit Paul's meaning in this day and age, though in 1611, the word "suffer" carried the same meaning at "allow," which is how the NASB translates the Greek epitrepo. It means, "permit," as in "I do not permit a woman to teach or exercise authority ... " and Paul goes on to explain why:1 Timothy 2, NASB
13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.
14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
15 But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.
No, let's not, because as I wrote above, it isn't "usurp" but "exercise." The Greek is authenteo from which we get "authority" in the English. It means to act on one's own authority. In other words, Paul is speaking of women who take upon themselves the mantle of teacher, pastor or preacher. The good news for women is, this translation leaves them open to being able to preach under a man's authority, either their husband's or their pastor's.On the contrary, we see exactly the opposite of that. Taking vv. 13-15 as quoted above in the context of v. 12, it is obvious Paul was not sanctioning female senior pastors, and female evangelists or teachers only who are willing to work under the covering authority of a qualified man. You might want to check out the use of the word "covering" in 1 Corinthians 11, which many have interpreted erroneously to mean women should were hats in church.Mmmm, no. It is God's judgment that, because they were deceived, they are not equal. That does not exclude them entirely, it just requires submission.Ah, but did she preach/teach that good news, or did she, as we see, submit to the disciples her eyewitness account and let them preach what she has seen?Luke 24
10 Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles.
---
21 "But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened.
22 "But also some women among us amazed us. When they were at the tomb early in the morning,
23 and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive.
24 "Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see."
You see, Mary did not preach. There is not a single passage in Scripture that will tell you anything other than she and the other women went to the men in authority over them to relate those events. Mary gave an eyewitness account to the disciples, who then preached, as did these men on the road to Emmaus, no knowing they were speaking to Jesus Himself.Clearly he did, but not in contradiction to God's will for women.
You know nothing brings me to anger faster than someone who preaches their opinion as Gods will.
Lets begin shall we.
The early church did not hold your view. ever Here of the
Woman That was known through out as "
The Teacher"? Wait a min a woman known as "The Teacher" why if this directly goes against what you are claiming as Gods will. what was this woman teacher name.
Macrina, The sister of Basil The Great and Gregory of Nyssa.
Basil studied in all the finest schools within the Roman empire. After his education he took a fine paying teaching job to which Macrina told him he had become vain, acting as though he was better than others. Basil thought nothing of it until later when his brother died, he then resigned and went to his sister Macrine and begged her to
teach him about the
secrets of religion. Lets stop there he asked a woman to teach him about God. There father was dead and Macrina was a strength to her family, she taught them about God, taught the men, get that. Marcrine was the founder of the Greek Monasticism. Her fame was such she was known simply as "The Teacher".(The story of Christianity: the Church to the Reformation vol 1, Gonzalez, Justo)
Both her brother became bishops in the roman empire.
So wait if it is "God's Will" that women not teach, that some how men are superior to women, Tell me this why did the early church not know that. Why was this Woman know through out the church, and world simply as "The Teacher"? Why was this Woman the founder of the Greek monk hood?
Which do you think had the greater sin? The Man, why because he willingly disobeyed God. At least the woman did not realize fully what she was doing.
Lets look at the Strong for 12
831 // auyentew // authenteo // ow-then-teh'-o //
from a compound of 846 and an obsolete hentes (a worker); v
AV - usurp authority over 1; 1
1) one who with his own hands kills another or himself
2) one who acts on his own authority, autocratic
3) an absolute master
4) to govern, exercise dominion over one
See that number 2 acts on there own authority, which is what usurp in modern terms. So now i suppose the KJV Translation is wrong we must now go back to the Hebrew, because you know more than the councils of the church right?
He again is speak of taking control over others by force or in that persons name it says nothing about The Holy Spirit speaking through a woman, because if The Holy Spirit speaks to you through a woman you better submit.
and let me ask you what you think God means when he says 15 But women will be saved through childbearing...
do you think he means through pain? That is not God, What My God Meant was children would be a woman's great joy. Now that is God. Ask a woman who has children if she agrees with that.
I understand because i am lead by God, I love truth, and my heart just would not let me believe that women were not are equal partners. I have Love.
Gen 23 NLT
23 At last! the man exclaimed.
This one is bone from my bone,
and flesh from my flesh!
She will be called woman,
because she was taken from man.
24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.
where in that do you get woman was anything less than a man?
