• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Is this true concerning the 12 step program?

Sometimes I get the impression that many people within the program, are tricked to believe that they are allowed to drink or do drugs, as long as they do not mention it to anyone! - The reason why i can suspect that is because so many people within the program get a relapse!? But then again i do not know if this conspiracy theory is true, is it!?

That is totally untrue. Relapses are dealt with by being honest and admitting them at the next meeting. Sobriety is celebrated with anniversaries being celebrated and coins given out.

Honesty is one of the key things that is promoted in the 12 step programs. Sponsors encourage their sponsees to be totally honest about slips and relapses.

Relapses are a part of many people's stories, and are learned from. Most people who relapse are people who do not complete all 12 steps of the program.

Emphasis is on working the 12th step and carrying the message of recovery to people who are still suffering.

I hope this makes sense.

Relasp is often a part of recovery, because people make some progress and then get to thinking "ok now I know how to handle my problems" thinking that addiction was one of their "problems", but addiction is addiction (more than a problem) & it is through going bk down they learn the 12-steps are a life long program.

It's a rough road to travel, but it's the only way most of us learn. (School of Hard Knocks) :)

If that happens it's because they tricked themselves, 'cause there's NO WAY that anyone who attends meetings regularly and honestly pays attention could get that message.
