--------------------------------------------------

Here is a better puzzle. As a result of an accident, two families are in the middle of the ocean with one small lifeboat which cannot hold more than one family. The evil family might indeed try to club the other so they can have the lifeboat to themselves. But more civilized people are more likely to put the children in the lifeboat while the capable adults swim along side.

Lets make it more difficult and assume that some of the adults are severly wounded and that some of the children have to do the swimming. Well now in that case some people will indeed have to make some difficult choices. But insisting that one of the injured adults take a turn at swimming is not quite the same as clubbing someone to death.

Ok now lets make it even more difficult. As people start getting really tired and put more of their weight on the boat, the boat begins to sink. What then? Push some of the heavier people off? Hmmmm...? If I had the strength to do that then I must be swimming, right? Pulling off the heaviest adult might kill him and it might kill me to. Under those conditions I might go for it.[/quote]

Just a quick question:

If two families are on an island, that has 1 fruit tree (The only sourse of food), that can only support one family (if they try to share it between 2, people WILL starve), is it a sin to try to kill members of the other family so your can survive?

Say your the head of one family, what should you do (With respect to what God would want you to do)?

*stole the question from yasic, a non christian...but the question still comes from me*

That totally ignored the question....it's a what if question. If a person was in that situation, is it a sin or not?

Thank you!

Why? I mean, I know killing is a sin. But..shouldn't a person have the right to survive?

Not trying to start a debate or anything, im seriously curious.

What if the food God provided was that tree. I mean, I don't know. It just doesn't seem like a person would have to be held accountable for something like that.

I'll tell you this, if I were in a situation where I knew the only way for me and my family to survive was to eat the other family...I'd definitely be killing some folks. Sure, prayer is fine. But when I'm literally starving to death and God still hasn't provided me any other source of food. I'm going to be eating some folks. (sounds nasty when i say it..)

God said: "Thou shalt not kill"

He did not add: "but it's OK if you are hungry"

True..
But there is a doctirne of a "just war" in most christian traditions, and there are tons of Biblical instances of God Ordering people to kill. Noone's saying you can commit murder in cold blood. But the Real question is, "do you have a right to self preservation?" If the other family decided they were going to steal all the fruit for themselves wouldn't you have aright to fight to feed your family? I don't think anyone is suggesting that war be a first option. But if it came down to it, I'd Kill to save my family if I had too.

Most Christian people would agree that they are followers of Christ. If you read the New Testament it is all about peace and love. There is nothing there about just wars or killing people. In fact Jesus said:
"Put away your sword, for all who live by the sword shall die by the sword."

It is clear, when reading the Old and New Testaments, that the teachings of Jesus were quite different to most of what you read in the Old Testament.

The teachings of Jesus reflected the Ten Commandments. I think that it is more healthy for people who are Christians to focus on the teachings of Jesus, not the Old Testament (apart from the Ten Commandments). I think that was what Jesus intended.

I disagree. I don't think that Jesus wanted us to do away with the law. Sure, he made things more clear. And he freed us from the consequences of the law that leads to condemnation. And yes, His teachings would lead to world peace if we followed them. However, You mentioned that Jesus told Peter to 'put away' his sword. if Peter is supposed to be a complete pacifist, what is he doing with a sword in the first place? I'll tell you, it wasn't for killing snakes, it for self defence.
