I'm not too sure if I fall into this category. I grew up Adventist, and I love the Adventist church, but sometimes they make me so angry. For awhile, I left the church and have only recently started to have the urge to return. I guess my biggest problem is that, at times, I feel that the church is just blind. There have been experiences in my past that have just made me want to flat out quit. I have had Adventists call my faith into question because I work on Saturdays to support my family. Don't get me wrong, I would love my Saturdays off for worship, but I have a responsibility as a husband and father to provide for my family. And I have not had much luck with management at my work being sympathetic towards my spiritual growth. Sometimes I feel that the church thinks that being a good Adventist is more important than being a good Christian. How is this right? And Ellen White whether she is or isn't a prophet is a whole other issue that I won't get into right now. All I will say is this...when I go to a church and hear a Pastor give a sermon, and everything he is preaching is, "Ellen White said this and Ellen White said that." and I don't hear one single reference to the Holy Bible, I feel that something is wrong. I worship in the House of God...not Ellen. I feel that I am alone in this experience. Is there anyone, ANYONE, who understands what I'm going through? Or am I just crazy?

Dear brother, the Sabbath is more than justa day to go to church for worship . It is a day separated from the cares of this world and be refreshed in Christ. To reflect on what God has and is doing on our behalf. The Sabbath is a special day of faith which shows our committment to the creator and to the restoration Christ is working out in our life in preparation for eternity. Yes God says we should support our family but more important is to have the faith in God that he will provide for us when we stand for Him and His truthes. Stand for God and God will stand for you. Keep the faith and I will keep you in prayer. God Bless.

I wouldn't agree that the SDA church is blind, but certain members in it most certainly are.

There have been experiences in my past that have just made me want to flat out quit. I have had Adventists call my faith into question because I work on Saturdays to support my family.

It is important to discern the difference between men calling your faith into question, as opposed to God using them as a means to accomplish this end for your own good. In other words, God often speaks through people to reach people.

Here is the way I see it: If what they are saying can be supported by the Bible, then they really aren't calling your faith into question; rather, God is; and if this is the case, then it would be according to your best interest to take heed to what is being said.

Don't get me wrong, I would love my Saturdays off for worship, but I have a responsibility as a husband and father to provide for my family. And I have not had much luck with management at my work being sympathetic towards my spiritual growth.

1. Where there is a will there is a way. God knows what you and your family need. Would He not be faithful in meeting such needs if you were to do what He says?

It's a matter of faith and trust in God. The more we place our implicit trust in Him, the more aware we'll become of His presence in our lives; and the more aware we become of His presence in our lives, the less we will worry about what we need. For, by faith we will foster the assurance that God has everything covered.

2. There are laws to protect the religious rights of people these days, thus enabling them to practice them without suffering the threat of employment termination.

Things can always be worked out. Have your pastor talk to your employer, to explain things to him. If it is possible, make an offer to work on Sunday's instead of Saturday's. There is always a solution.

If it doesn't work out, then perhaps you should take it as a sign that God wants you to find someone else to work for; or maybe He would rather have you work for yourself. Have you ever considered starting your own business? It's not as difficult as people seem to think. You just have to find something that you enjoy doing, and use it to make money. And if you do it to God's glory, He will see to it that you get the funds you need to operate it.

Sometimes I feel that the church thinks that being a good Adventist is more important than being a good Christian. How is this right?

What we infer and what is intended are two different things. Thus we often misinterpret the intentions of others.

Yet, at the same time, some people are as you describe. We just need to be patient with such people however, as Jesus is patient with us.

Moreover, we need to be careful that we don't assume they mean something that they really never meant. Actions, and even words for that matter, can be deceiving. This is why it is best to approach such people and ask them what they really mean when it seems like they are saying something that just doesn't feel right to you.

And if they tell you that they really didn't mean what you thought they meant, then accept that. Some people will insist that such people meant something other than what they said they meant. In fact, I just had a problem with someone like this in one of the threads that I started. It is quite annoying when people do this. They just won't listen to the facts.

If this is really what you are experiencing, then I suggest you report it to your local SDA conference, because this pastor should not be doing this. Yet, before you do this, be sure that it's not an exaggeration on your part that the pastor is using the writings of Ellen White in place of the Holy Scriptures.

Nevertheless, if it is true that he is doing this, and nothing is done about it, then perhaps you ought to find another SDA church to attend.

I feel that I am alone in this experience. Is there anyone, ANYONE, who understands what I'm going through? Or am I just crazy?

Jesus understands. He will never let you down. Cast your cares on Him, knowing that He cares for you.

Things will work out for the best as long as you maintain your faith and loyalty to God.

There are those in the church who would insist that you should not work on the sabbath but have no problem with employees at our institutions working on the sabbath. That position is hypocritical... if working on the sabbath is wrong then why do we make exceptions....

In the part of the country where I am campmeeting is being held... the custodial staff, the cafeteria workers, security, etc all are working on sabbath to keep the campgrounds clean, safe, making sure people have meals etc...that is work... yet we don't blink an eye...

Joshua I understand where you are and would simply say, make sure you and God are on the same page regardless of what people may say..... the man who does not provide for his family is worse than an infidel... so you keep doing what you are doing until God opens another door.....

Dear Ex SDA.
Thousands and thousands men and women go away from the SDA churches, leaders and members. Some after
40 years, in the year 1934 till today. Most come never
back and visit others churches. Outsiders and insiders call this frog-members. It's very disapointed that people
donn't understand the teachings from this little church

His name is Joshua as you can see from his user ID. He is also not an ExSDA. If you looked closer you would have noticed in his post that he says he loves the SDA church. Also, it isn't polite to imply that he is a frog-member, or anyone else for that matter!

The person that coined that term obviously doesn't have much respect for people who have been hurt!

You know, the number one reason why people leave the church is because they aren't treated like REAL people, but just simply as members. Think about that.

Peace can rule.

Most things are a Spiritual battle anyway, even when we see each others spots or ways of posting and doing things. This is when we can choose to ask God what others are really saying in their heart.

So we can choose to have Mercy and others, not sacrifice, right where they are.

Yep I'm definately speaking to my own self here.

The Lord works in Mysterious Ways indeed,

Actually I was fired twice: reason is still unknown, but part of it was because I never worked manditory overtime on Saturday. To me I was fired for my beliefs, but I had no proof, what the law states is that managers have the right to fire an employee without reason.

You have just failed a test of faith. If you had faith in God you would take the Sabbath off and trust that God would help you. I don’t have a job, because I refuse to work on my Sabbath, but God has always put food on our tables and clothes on our backs. If you put your faith on high and trust God he will always take care of you. I know it’s a bit scary, because you might lose your job, but once again that just shows the weakness in your faith. Do not put the laws of the earth before God's.

Riiight. And you obviously are in a place of moral authority to tell me whether or not my faith is strong. Such pompous arrogance.

that's foolishness.... and it's hypocritical..... there are those in church who would have you quit working on the sabbath, YET our own schools and hospitals, and churches require its employees to work on sabbath...... the pastor is working on sabbath..... in sda hospitals its not just the nurses and doctors working on sabbath..... in sda colleges there are people working on sabbath.... what is wrong with that picture?

Remember, Dasdream, that Jesus practiced tact when He taught and shared, which is something we, too, need to remember when dealing with other people. In order to share your view in a non-threatening, loving manner, I would say something like:

Yes, I see what you are saying, Joshua. I agree, it can be tough and we certainly need to provide for our families. I wish you could enjoy the Sabbath as much as I do, though. Maybe you could pray and have faith and ask God to help you get the Sabbath off? I hope the best, and pray that you will follow the Holy Spirit's personal conviction for you in this situation.

Or something like that.
