Marriage was designed by God as a representation on earth of the relationship between Jesus and His bride, the Church. (This is why christians oppose other types of marriage which are currently socially popular, as they openly mock God, intended or otherwise.)
As a result, the design of marriage is shown to us in two steps:
1. Wives submit to the husbands - Not because the male is greater than the female to God, not at all, but rather as a picture of how the Church should submit to the Lord, "Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands." Eph 5:22-24
2. Husbands love their wives as Christ loves His Church - This is where the husband nourishes and loves the wife as a physical extension of himself, sacrificially. As Jesus does to His Church, where correction is needed, it is given in love, but where punishment is needed, it is taken on by the husband upon Himself, as Jesus took the punishment of His bride upon Himself. "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body." Eph 5:25-30
Unless he can justify his behavior as being the way Jesus interacts with His Church, then it is not permissible. (I'm also assuming this man is your husband, based on your reference of women submitting to your husband and your 'married' icon, otherwise, none of this applies to your situation at the moment.)
Unfortunately, there are a lot of men out there who are only familiar with the this passage up to verse 24 (wives submitting), and somehow become oblivious to anything in verses 25 through 30, because the biggest responsibility between the two falls on the husband, as their role in the family also includes the role of 'priest' as well.
