• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is this a materialistic problem?

In the event of a natural disaster that required me to load up the truck and hit the road... I'd gather emergency supplies for survival, my pets, and my external hard drive (acts as a backup to my PC), and any irreplacable documents like a birth cirtificate for example. The only materialistic possesions I'd be scrambling for is my videos, books, music CD's, and photo albums. Do you think that placing high value on these four things is a sinful materialistic practice?

My two cents worth. I would hope you'd make any loved ones first priority and certainly, survival items (fresh water, tinned food, matches etc) seem essential. Photographs etc make a lot of sense too, as a priority after the others mentioned. This part wouldn't be sinful. I think the rest would depend on time... if getting CDs and books etc put the lives of yourself or loved ones in danger by the time delay, this would surely be placing a lower value on their lives and your own life and therefore be sinful. If it makes no difference and there is plenty of time, why not take these other things that mean something to you.

I should have added that I would only do so if essentials like people, pets, survival gear, and so on was all ready to go. I just wonder if placing value on thinks like books, video, music, and photo albums is a sin.
The bible is a book. Is it a sin to value this? Surely not! What about other books that help you? That can't be a sin. Or books that have special significance for you? As long as you have your priorities right and you've mentioned you'd take care of humans, pet, survival gear etc first... I mean, if it is wrong to take these other things such as CDs, books etc with you in a disaster situation, then it must be wrong to have them in the first place... Can you seriously say you shouldn't have any possessions at all?
