  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is there something wrong with listening to music that isn't under a christian label?

Ok, I love all different types of music. My pastor says that we shouldn't listen to any music other than music that uplifts God. Well, I listen to Christian music a plenty but i also like songs from other artists. I don't listen to music with a bad message or cussing in it. And i really don't see why God would care, i mean, music is to enjoy.

What do you think?

I think that all music that isn't immoral in nature uplifts God because it showcases the gifts He gave to the artist. Monet's paintings are of landscapes, but they still give glory to God.

I listen to tons of Christian music, but lots of secular stuff too. Don't worry about it.

Yeah I fully agree with that. I listen to HEAPS of christian music cos I work in one of the biggest christian retail companies, but I listen to heaps of secular stuff too. A lot of secular bands sing about issues that are still so relevant to us and a lot of spirituality and life issues and they are so blatantly open, honest and unashamed in their lyrics that it is as symbolic and meaningful for me, if not more than the majority of contemporary christian albums.

A lot of band members I know prefer not to classify themselves as a christian band for the fact that it limits the places they get to play and they can only get gigs with religious functions, rather than being able to use their music to outreach to the secular market with their music & lyrics even if they do need to be more subtle. And I think it's really important that we don't get out of touch with the rest of the world and get caught up in our own closed world....

yeah as long as the bands aren't dodgy and give out a hidden message

one good example is the Rolling Stones. They have a backing track in their songs that tells you to do wrong stuff apparently

You do realize that the "backtracking conspiracy" thing was really just all hype and no substance, right? It got so bad that some artists did intentionally do it to rile up people, but that was only after the media hype in the early 80s (so the Stones, the Beatles, Chicago, etc. weren't doing it, sorry). It was so ridiculous that Weird Al even parodied it on one campy track on one of his early albums.

the main thing that you have to remember is this... what is the eternal value of it... if what you are listening too in anyway disagrees with the scripture... then it comes from someplace other than the throne of God...some lyrics can be taken a # of different ways and have very different meanings to different people...a perfect example of this is Hallelujah... from the Shrek movie ...I have heard numerous Christians praise this song... even to include it in a worship service...however...if you examine the lyrics... you will find that the song very much could be a very vivid description of a sexual encounter between 2 people...the key thing to remember is whatever you put into your heart is what is going to come out...if you fill it with the praises of God.. .then more than likely His praises will flow from your lips...if you fill it with the stuff of the world... then that is what is going to come out...

I really believe it depends on the music artist you want to list to. You have to consider who they are and what there music is about. The music you listen to will affect you whether you think so or not. And even though someone is under a christian label it won't necessarilly mean that they have there had screwed on right and there music is healthy for you. If you have a good relationship with Jesus and you are intune with His Spirit I suggest getting His opinion on whether the music is ok. :)
