• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Is there something demonic about OCD?

I remember reading somewhere that OCD is the devil whispering to you however I don't know if this has any truth to it as far as Christianity is concerned. Might be worth looking further in to it though.

It's not the devil whispering to you. Tourette's and OCD and neurological disorders, that's all. All this speculation of Tourette's and OCD being demonic in nature is incredibly hurtful and insulting to people that have it.

There is nothing demonic about OCD. It's a chemical imbalance out of the individual's control. With that logic cancer and other physical illnesses have a demonic origins too. Sigh. And, as someone who suffers from it, I think it's offensive. Saying it's a spiritual problem is equally ignorant and hurtful. It implies that if you truly accepted Christ you wouldn't be having problems.

Love your reply. It makes my blood boil when Christians spout their professional, spiritual "opinions" that Tourette's is demonic possession. I'll tell you what I tell my son with Tourette's. Your disorders make you unique and special. God loves you right where you're at!

OCD does not have its origin in sin! The fact is it's a disease we don't choose! Yes I do believe God has more love and understanding than some of these posts. He will NOT hold thoughts against a person, especially if the thoughts horrify us! We feel horrible enough already since the thoughts target things that are most dear to the person.

It's disturbing ignorance like this exists today.

Not to diminish the spiritual reality of life or the existence of the devil, but the clear answer is no.
Scrupulosity is a very severe form of OCD and is often confused by well meaning Christians.
I had one of the most severe cases health professionals have ever seen similar to Martin Luther.
This was before the level of awareness about the disorder (pre-web 2.0) reached the mainstream.
The nature of the disorder is to attack whatever you care about most and find any possible threat and attempt to neutralize it. With that in mind, fear of an eternal or spiritual nature cannot be tested or satisfactorily be dismissed. This results in cycling intrusive thoughts, rituals, and fear of unforgiveness, or committing a transgression that can't be undone. The truth is, you've never committed these acts no matter how much you think you have. Because you are not accountable in any way shape or form for your intrusive thoughts or resulting actions from these thoughts. Because you're under abnormal distress that further impairs your judgment. God made you and understands all facets of your biology and physiology and understands these are just misfirings in your brain that you cannot be responsible for. Nor (for those who used drugs alcohol etc or any other thing(I just want to cover the bases)) could you have had any foreknowledge of how those actions would manifest as scrupolous OCD.

I have OCD. At my worst I was suicidal. I also think this can be applied to Depression, which I also have. God will not hold someone responsible for things outside of their control.

Another outdated myth that needs to go is the one that suicide automatically leads to Hell. The same reasoning applies with what I wrote above.

Absolutely. You know, I think Christian's worse enemy are other Christians. These are the opinions we get from other believers. That's why I'm not a huge "only hang out with other Christians" type of guy. I have secular friends with more compassion.

I know right? This subject matters to me because I lost a loved one to suicide. And I agree. I can't have too many Christian friends due to their damaged thinking in this area. I want some secular friends too, a healthy balance of both.

I can understand why so many people want nothing to do with Christianity.

BUT I have met amazing Christians who don't hold that view. I think God answered my prayers because I prayed to meet people who actually display Christ like love
