Is there any non christian music / songs that are neutral, innocuous not harmful to ones spiritual life, not promoting hedonism.
A little bit of bio first:
Growing up we had a bit of mixture in terms of records knocking about the house - my christian parents discouraged me from listening to worldly music but somehow records entered the house and I would often listen to these - chart music of the 70s - including Queen, and many others. Unlike most of kids of my age I didn't buy pop records during my teens, anything I listened was stuff older brothers had. The first tape of my own I bought was Amy Grant Lead Me On - by then a christian/secular distinction seemed to be ingrained in my brain, for I regarded Amy Grant as "christian music".
For a while I only bought "christian music", but I listened and liked a lot of the music on the radio also.
I think this question all turns on what one means by worldly, and how we understand what biblically the world is?
I know there are people who don't pay much attention to the words of pop music.
I am listening currently to a duo that were popular in the eighties: Wang Chung - they have released an orchestral pop CD - made in collaboration with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra
Some of their songs you might remember if you are over 35
Dance Hall Days,
Everybody have fun tonight.
To live an die in LA
Let's go
I like to hear peoples thoughts on these songs - I'll not post videos to them all, but they are easy to find on Youtube
What outlooks, philosophies of life etc do these songs express?
Will it depend on each individual what they take from any song, is there any point to trying to find out what the songwriter meant?
I wonder if sometimes christians are not comprehending (don't "get" the song) and too simplistic in their assessment of contemporary music?
Interested to hear peoples thoughts on any aspect of the subject.
