Is there any point in getting involved in "worldly" activities?

By worldly I mean sciences, entertainment etc. I know we are to keep a loose grip on everything here and be completely content with ditching it if He commands for any reason (if one is even given), but I have a really deep passion for engineering and aerospace. Is there any point in pursuing study/work in this if there's not even any planes to build in heaven? Seems kind of useless to have someone around who praises Him with his mouth and nothing else, but that's just because of my preconception that we'll spend all eternity basically at church.

I have an Engineering degree in computer science. I believe that God uses people in various fields to witness to fellow workers in that field as someone who can reach them , speaking at their same level of interest. Paul was a tent maker. Peter a fisherman, Christ a Carpenter for 30 years.

Walking along side our fellow man "as one of them" is how we are often called to reach them.

Still you must walk the very difficult path of being "IN the World - but not OF The World" John 17. Spend time in devotions and worship each day.. as much as time permits.

Don't let your vision for evangelism, soul winning, finding pure doctrine, knowing how to share your faith - be totally wiped out in pursuit of money. Have a balanced life - observe the Sabbath each week - an entire day set aside for God and used as a reminder pulling you back down to Earth and the reality of the Gospel.

.
I agree with this ^

p.s. - while witnessing, evangelism and apologetics must be our focus, first and foremost, I also believe that God gave each of us the ability to perform various/specific tasks or vocations well in this life (for our good AND for the good of others, of course), and I believe that He is glorified when we do so (especially if it is our intention to glorify Him in the process :oldthumbsup:).

At any rate, we never have to be out of touch with God as we are, in fact, admonished to practice His presence in EVERY moment of our lives, yes .. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

God has created an amazing universe. Those of us who study the sciences spend our lives studying the universe that God has made. I think there's plenty of purpose in that. Even in everyday life, I try to remind myself to pay attention to what God has made: this tree, that cloud, all the work of the Great Artist.

Yes, of course.
The point is:
a) we all need time to relax and are allowed to do things that we enjoy
b) how can someone be salt and light in the world, or witness to non Christians if they never get out into the world and meet non believers?

I know we are to keep a loose grip on everything here and be completely content with ditching it if He commands for any reason

That's not the same as avoiding it completely and never doing anything.

but I have a really deep passion for engineering and aerospace.

Great! God gave you that passion.

Is there any point in pursuing study/work in this

Yes - you've just said you have a deep passion for it.
That's a great reason.

if there's not even any planes to build in heaven?

Are you planning on going to heaven tomorrow?
You might live for another 30 years - or longer; what will you do until then?

Seems kind of useless to have someone around who praises Him with his mouth and nothing else, but that's just because of my preconception that we'll spend all eternity basically at church.

We are going to spend eternity in God's presence worshipping and serving him, together with thousands of other Christians.
It will be nothing like a church service - thank heavens.

I suggest that it is more than possible to be an effective witness while working in the fields of science and technology. We are in the world for our natural lives. God expects us to work for a living. Professor James Tour is an example of how it can be done. He is a research scientist, inventor, evangelist and preacher. He puts Jesus first in his life.
