  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is there any music you shouldn't listen to?

I like metal and rock and hardhouse and trance and many kinds of music. But since becoming a Christian there are certain songs I don't listen to because I don't see how it can glorify God and I can't imagine Him wanting anyone to listen to it. For instance Slayer.

Recently I've come accross strong arguements that you can glorify and praise God though all types of musics and just because I don't doesn't mean that other people can't.

Can you glorify God through listening to anti-christian and quite disturbing lyrics?

Depends on why you are listening to it.

For instance, I've been doing some work on finding out what our culture identifies with; one of the easiest ways to find this out is to check out the music people listen to.

My goal is to be able to better understand how to witness to people, and I that is a very Biblical goal I believe.

I'll tell you the same thing that I tell my youth group kids. Techinically you can listen to whatever you want just cuz that's your choice, but my suggestion is that you don't listen to any kind of music that brings you down. I hate country music cuz it makes me depressed so I don't listen to it, becuz I know it's not good for me. Any kind of music you listen to it will get into your head and effect your additude and the way you think about things, so if you're listening to some kind of music with a bad message ...yeah that's going to get into your head too, no matter if you think it doesn't effect you ..it does and it will.
With so many Christian bands out there these days, basically it's everywhere and every kind of genre. So it is possible to listen to whatever kind of music that you really like or love and have it be Christian music, which is not only going to have better lyrics, but better role models.

That's what I tell my teen group. So I would guess anti-christian and quite disturbing lyrics would not be the kind of music that you want to be listening, but you could always try a Christian alternative to that style.

I listen to secular music on the occasion, but I have to remember not to get too caught up in the old bands that I used to listen to and forget that there is better stuff. I think that as long as you listen to secular music in moderation (like an occasoinal thing) and don't get caught up in the depressing stuff you'll be fine.

However you are a new christian, so it would probably be better for you to just bury yourself in that scene for a while, you'll be surprised when you poke your head out how bad everything else is. What little secular music that I do listen is stuff that isn't really popular, I was already into obscure little known bands before I got heavy into christian music, so I don't know bery many of that pop songs at all.

What are you trying to say here?

Lots of secular music is sinful, but a little isn't?

Perhaps you should explain your position Biblically. :)

Well lets put it like this... I know Christians who listen to Silpnot and Marilyn Manson... that kind of thing...

What do you say to people who listen to that alot of the time and are (to my knowledge) Christian? Cause I don't want to be telling them what to do or listen to... and I don't want to come across as judging them... but I don't think what they are doing is glorifying God...

I don't understand how Christians can think like that. They should be reading what the word says and stop making their own theologies.

Style perhaps? It all boils down to the lyrics. Is it fruitful or is it futile?

I've heard Christian Black Metal lyrics with a much more stronger and powerful message than most of those fluffy over-the-radio Christian contemporary stuff.

Eminem. Don't listen to him. A guy came to our church and posted different lyrics to his and other ppl's songs. I felt like washing my eyes out with soap. They talk about everything and GLORIFY it. rape, burglary, murder, cheating, lying, drinking, drugs, premarital sex, etc.
Even if someone listens "just for the beat" you subconciously absorb the lyrics.

Personally:
I listen to music that I like, unless that music is appalling because of its content, style of music, or lack of originality. I don't listen to a lot of "Christian" music because it lacks one of the above. I also don't listen to a lot of rap for the same reasons.

I was into a lot of hard rock secular music ( I still listen a little; trying to stop). I found that I had to get away from that type of music when I listened to Christian music. In spite of the good lyrics of these Christian rock groups, I would feel the same way emotionally as I did listening to my secular favourites. Personally, it was a way for me to subconsciously cling to my old life in the world while embracing my new life as a Christian.

This is my own situation. If you are blessed by the music you listen to, then continue by all means!

What is healthy?

Colossians 3:16-17 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

It's not the "style" that counts - but obviously the content is important. Does your music fit the description found in Colossians 3:16-17?

I would think that as long as a song isn't blaspheming God or glorifying sin, that it should be fine to listen to. I would certianly recommend finding the lyrics to any CDs you want to buy and check them out for yourself. You need to decide whether or not you can handle what is being said.

And as far as "absorbing" lyrics and it affecting us, has that been proven or do people like Phil Chalmers just like tos ay it to keep people from listening to "evil{" music?

Being a Christian is about having a relationship with Christ. If secular music affects that relationship, then you really need to consider what's more important.

Even though there are people who will tell you otherwise, not everyone is affected by the music they listen to. It all depends on where you are with your relationship. It's kinda like people who run with a rough crowd. Some can do it and maintain their relationship with Christ, even be a shining light to the crowd they're with. Some get into a crowd like that, and they start becoming like the crowd. So it depends on how much you're affected by your surroundings, I guess.

Bottom line, this is why God gave us a thing called conviction. If you're convicted over listening to music, then you shouldn't. Unless you value the music more than God.

Rom. 14,23 outtake.. "For everythin witch is not out of faith, is sin."
if you can say that you can listen to secular music and fully glorify God with what you are doing, than it is nothing wrong with it. although i have a hard time believeing that you can listen to something that talkes against the word of God, out of faith..

personally i've almost stopped to listen to secular music, because there is so much great christian music. why listen to something that can draw you further away from God, when you can listen to something that can draw you nearer?

just remeber, if you are in doubt about what you are doing is wrong, and you still do it, whay you do will become a sin. (look up the whole verse!! romans 14,23)
God bless!
