Yes, the RCC does believe in prugatory. They say that it is spoken about in the Apocrypha.

I have found nothing in Scripture that supports purgatory. Jesus tells us that when we die, we will be with Him that day.

something between heaven and hell--I think that is where we live today. I think Heaven is being directly in the presence of God. I think Hell is the complete absence of God. I think here, we can be in God's presence if we choose, but it is "as if looking through a glass dimly." We can't see Him for all His goodness--one day, though, I will!
As to purgatory? I'm personally not a believer, but I think there are many who do so after their own careful study of scripture, so I don't fault anyone for it.
Take care

Hi Robert,

Catholics, as dave said, do still believe in purgatory. The Bible does not say anything about purgatory. As dave also said there is some allusion to it in the apocrypha (which is not inspired scripture). However there are some who believe that the Catholics also got this doctrine in part from the "compartmental grave" theory. Whether that is true or not, I could not say. Though it seems to fit...

I've read the NT through and have never seen any reference to any place that is meant for anyone who is not going to heaven or hell. The Bible says nothing about any other place other than heaven or hell. The Bible says nothing about Purgatory.

I've never seen anything even in the Apocrypha about purgatory. The doctrine of Purgatory exists by mere accident. Tertullian, who according to the Roman Catholic Church died a heretic, accidentally created the doctrine of purgatory while refuting a theory of reincarnation. After his death Catholics began to accept many of his teachings that they had formerly declared to be heresy, like purgatory and one-marriage-only in ALL cases (no exception, although Jesus gave ONE exception), etc.

The Deuterocanonical books say that praying for the dead is a noble and Godly act. Since the dead haven't been Resurrected or Judged yet, they cannot be in either heaven or hell. They are awaiting in the realm of the dead; sheol (or to Catholics, purgatory).

There is no half way house, three quarters, or any other fraction that a person can go to apart from from heaven or hell.

daveleau, do you deny the Resurrection and the Judgment?
Purgatory dose away with the Resurrection and the Judgement.

I believe that those who died in the Lord before Christ's death were in the grave awaiting the resurrection of our Savior. At that time, I believed that they were risen after Him into Heaven.

As for men (and women) who die after Christ, I believe that we either go directly to Heaven or to Hell based on our relationship with the Lord. However, I am open to hearing other viewpoints on this.

Outside of that, I have never seen any Scriptural support for the concept of purgatory, not in the Bible nor in the apocrypha. At most, the apocrypha implies in one Scripture that it is noble to pray for the dead. While I won't get into the merits of that here, even assuming that to be correct is a far cry from the doctrine of purgatory.

Nope. Read official Catholic belief on purgatory; they will be Resurrected and Judged.
