Is there a permanent solution to dandruff?

Hi

I have been plagued by dandruff for my entire life, and frankly I am sick of it. :p I've tried various treatments in the past with little effect. Recently I tried using Head & Shoulders, for about 2 months, but not long after I stopped (basically, I ran out of the stuff and haven't gotten around to getting more) the dandruff came back again.

So my question is, is there a long term or permanent solution to dandruff other than constantly using an anti-dandruff shampoo such as H&S or whatever. I don't like H&S because it screws up my hair, makes it feel dry & frizzy.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers,

Dave

I don't know of any permanent solutions. However, you might try washing your hair with anti-dandruff shampoo 2 or 3 times a week to help keep it at bay. I've heard that Neutragena T-Gel is good.

Actually it's as good as it gets. However it has 2 drawbacks. The smell and if you color your hair, this product is not for you. It can be a little pricey. CVS makes a very similar product for a lot less. But as long as you can bear the hideous odor and you like your natural color, the little bottle of brown shampoo works very well.

My sister's a hairstylist and she swears by Nioxin, a line of products formulated for all different types of scalp problems including dandruff. It's really, really good stuff, you have to get it from a salon so it's slightly more spendy. It's not stinky or a weird color. It would not dry or frizz out your hair, at least not any more than it is damaged already. It will treat the symptom but not the underlying problem.

Beyond treating it with shampoo you'll have to get a look at your general overall health. Dry frizzies and flakes can indicate a lot of issues. Stress, lack of adequate hydration, poor nutrition, immune system disfunction, allergies, thyroid problems etc. etc. Do you have other issues besides a flaky scalp? Your doctor could give you some common sense advice.

I agree. Sometimes dandruff is signalling a different problem. Give yourself a once over!!

Do you know what kind of dandruff it is? I used to have it, but it turned out I just didn't get the shampoo all the way out of my hair (Long hair is bad), then it went away once I took care of that. There are also diseases and such that cause it. What is yours caused by?
