  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hallo Alles,

I am a univ. student and the Classics professors at my school are difficult. I am a history major and classics seem, to me, to be a difficult and minutely detailed (micro) orientated subject. It is very focused on process and explanation, as well as very date specific. History, to me, does not seem like that, its not even that date specific!

What do tou think?

When i took World Civilization i hated all the dates and names... i know the purpose and function but for me it was the over-arching themes. i loved to learn about the different cultures and religions.. i even liked politics sorta... but it annoyed me having to know all those dates and people.. i dont know how anyone can remember all that information, its crazy to me...

like tommorow i have a test in old testament survey 2 and we went thorugh 2 Samuel and 1 and 2nd Kings - there is so much informaiton packed in there... im worried i wont remember it all but if i concentrate i know i will learn it and do alright, at least for the test

I think this is going to be different from school to school. I had several courses in classiscs. They were more concerned with a multidisciplinary approach to the classics. We'd read literature, study the art, and listen to music from an era. We'd use our knowledge of history to understand why the arts reflected what they did during a particular era. Approximate dates wereused.
Great classes!
