• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is santa evil now?

First: I realize the origin of santa came from a cheerful old man in europe who gave trinkets to children on christmas. That was completely innocent, and a kind gesture. Nothing wrong with that.

But Santa has turned into a monster. Has the idea gotten so perverted, that the modern interpretation of santa... is evil?

important points to consider:

1: Especially around christmas time, tell a normal child "Who watches over you and sees every time you're good or bad? Who do you need to be good for?" How many do you think would say God instead of Santa?

2: Most children don't care if God sees them torture frogs... just as long as santa doesn't. Children are having an eternal omniscient being who will judge whether they are good or evil shoved down their throat to replace God.

3: Name all the christmas songs you can about santa... now name all the christmas songs you can about Jesus. Notice anything. Christmas is about santa, not Jesus, according to the songs.

4: It's a stretch, but look at the symbology around santa. Dana Carvey aptly pointed out "Santa" and "Satan" are very close spellings. Both big and red. Both creatures of the night. Santa's rotund physique is the embodyment of gluttony, and he rewards children with material posessions giving him an aspect of greed that cannot be denied (honestly, I know this sounds silly... but think about how spoiled many children get around christmas? Greed). That's two of the deadly sins right there.

5: You know that old advice "thou shall not lie." How many parents lie to their children for years, putting this perverted false god in front of their eyes only for the child later to find out it's all a lie. How hurt are children when they realize that Santa isn't real? Lying is a third deadly sin.

6: And what about the works of the flesh written in galatians 5
galatians 5:19-21 said:
19 Now the works of the flesh are clear, which are these: evil desire, unclean things, wrong use of the senses, 20 Worship of images, use of strange powers, hates, fighting, desire for what another has, angry feelings, attempts to get the better of others, divisions, false teachings, 21 Envy, uncontrolled drinking and feasting, and such things: of which I give you word clearly, even as I did in the past, that they who do such things will have no part in the kingdom of God.

most of the works of the flesh are clearly shown during christmas time, during the time when depression sky rockets, stress levels go through the roof... You get the point.

7: Santa's just plain scary. Come on... he watches little boys while they sleep seeing which ones are "naughty"... santa's a pervert.

Obviously this is my biased opinion because I want to justify yesterday when I told my 4 year old nephew that he was spoiled and santa was dead. But... I think I was doing him a favor ridding him of false idols...

What do you think? (Yes... I know some of it was off the wall... liek the santa's a pervert thing... but it's true.) :)

Is your OP complete satire? I mean, seriously now. Honestly, the whole concept of Santa Claus is that it's fun for the kids and (quite frankly) gives us parents a break during the already stressful and hectic holidays. I would rather my son have slight fear and some reverence for an imaginary character that some day when he's a bit older will know is make-believe than spend the rest of his life fearing eternal damnation at the hands of a vengeful, angry God.

Not now relative to the last 10 years... just sort of a "now a days" type thing. The "santa claus" character was made after an actual person (norwegen, I think?) who gave toys to the little children of his village, at that point, nothing was wrong. But now he's viewed as an omniscient judge of good and evil. Does that not make him a bit of an idol? The fact that it causes people to lie, be greedy, be enveous, he's the embodyment of gluttony... Santa's a bad man.

Wait, this rings a bell with "omniscient God", except He watches not only little boys and girls but grown ups too

Is there anyone left in this world that thinks of Santa as something christians should involve themselves in?
Well, if they feel like, it, anyways Santa is very Christian, let me tell you what we have in Russia

It is a dude called "Ded Moroz" and he has a chick with him (Snegurochka), and shes dressed all in silver, these were originally pulled out from some obscure pagan mythology, and made popular by the atheist communists, in a method of suppressing the church

So, Santa?, this guy could be a lot worse

But even Orthodox celebrate Christmas with "Ded Moroz", since even though it came through obscure pagan origins, it is a family tradition, and denying a child something as fun as Christmas is mental torture for the child

an example of that is in Russia many Jehovas witnesses, children commit suicide during the Christmas season, because they are not allowed to celebrate it in any way shape or form, so my point is it is better to keep Santa, and everything connected, slowly make it more Christian, but stay with it

Santa isn't isn't evil. The good old Saints that he is based on did good work in the name of Christianity, and for Christianity, and for humanity. Those traditions have continued and strengthed.

No, the people who are evil are those who use the goodness of Santa to advertise things that aren't of good quality, to sell, to manipulate... those who use Santa as a way to sell cheap product often made in questionable, even illegal and deadly, factories... those who use Santa as a way to expect presents from others without giving back... those who use it as a way to give just once a year...

No, leave Santa alone. Start harking those who are walking around Earth today and using Christmas as a greedfest.

I would just like to add that the only time I've really seen parents use the whole "Santa is dead" or "Santa is evil" or "Santa forgot us" excuse used by parents that I actually know in real life are sad times indeed. Parents who just don't want to bother to Christmas and would rather get themselves a new computer (even when they have a year-old one) instead of giving their children clothing that the really need, and a nice family dinner. Or mothers who have had thier husbands leave them and clean out their bank account, and few family or friends nearby. Thankfully, I've also then seen friends of the computer-nerd give lots of useful gifts to the children on their next birthday, and various scumbags parent's take in the daughter-in-law and child or children, or helping the daughter-in-law get back to her hometown to be close with family and friends.

Just a thought...

Santa is no better or worse than the way parents choose to use the Santa character. I've seen parents tell small children who are misbehaving that a police officer is going to come take them to jail, those parents are idiots, that doesn't mean police are inherently evil. Telling children they will personally be "punished" by Santa if they are "bad" is a rather distasteful thing in my opinion, and is overdone by some parents, but they are the same type of parents as the ones who threaten children with policemen, those who want some other authority figure to hold more power with their child than themselves. Someone else to blame when a child has to be disciplined.

Do christians celebrate the birth of Jesus because he brings "Peace on Earth" or watches over you like a micro-manager?
To a 6 year old, "salvation" is a much harder concept than getting presents, so at Christmas, I would guess Santa.
However, Jesus didn't come to walk the earth and tell everyone that he's watching them, so watch out!

2: Most children don't care if God sees them torture frogs... just as long as santa doesn't. Children are having an eternal omniscient being who will judge whether they are good or evil shoved down their throat to replace God.
The same can be said of adults. If you are Christian, they don't care if they swore at their secretary, lied to someone about a deal to make it sound more appealing, got rip roaring drunk last night or went to the strip joint for their friend's bachelor party.
They can simply ask for forgiveness at church the next day. Besides, "christians are perfect - just forgiven."
3: Name all the christmas songs you can about santa... now name all the christmas songs you can about Jesus. Notice anything. Christmas is about santa, not Jesus, according to the songs.
Jesus:
Silent Night
The First Noel
Hark! The Harold angels sing
What Child is this?
Joy to the World
Angels we have heard on High
Away in the Manger
O Little Town of Bethleham
Little Lord Jesus
Mary, did you know?
God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman
Little Drummer Boy

Santa:
Here Comes Santa Claus
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Baby
I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer

General Holiday Cheer:
It's the most wonderful time of the year
Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas
Have a Holly Jolly Christman
I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas
I'll be home for Christmas

My conclusion:
Most songs are about Jesus.
I listened to the radio that played "the sounds of Christmas."
I would say that the songs of Jesus were about 1/2, songs of Santa 1/4, and songs about being happy, togetherness, family, etc, were about 1/4.

It says more about the heart of the person that interprets it than the subject being talked about.

One could say, "Jesus had long hair, so he was a hippie, and probably smoked dope. He only hung out with men, and never married - fact, one of the disciples refers to himself as "the one whom Jesus loved", suggesting that Jesus was a homosexual. He turned water into wine, promoting drinking, and walked on water, practicing witchcraft.

Most people disagree, but that's because they see what's there, and don't project what is in their own hearts onto the Christ.
5: You know that old advice "thou shall not lie." How many parents lie to their children for years, putting this perverted false god in front of their eyes only for the child later to find out it's all a lie. How hurt are children when they realize that Santa isn't real? Lying is a third deadly sin.
This is a good point.
A friend of mine, when told there was no Santa, said, "Really? And the Easter Bunny?"
That was us, too, after you fell asleep.
"And the tooth fairy?"
We snuck into your room and slipped money under your pillow.
And Jesus?...
6: And what about the works of the flesh written in galatians 5

most of the works of the flesh are clearly shown during christmas time, during the time when depression sky rockets, stress levels go through the roof... You get the point.

Galations 5:22 says

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

And that is seen as well.
If one buys into commercialism of a sacred event, then stress sets in.
There are also people that don't have anyone to spend the holiday with, and are often forgotten, because most people only care about their own family, and their own christmas.
And since the day after Thanksgiving, you are expected to be extremely happy until Christmas, listen to a month long of Christmas songs everywhere - it's just too much.
7: Santa's just plain scary. Come on... he watches little boys while they sleep seeing which ones are "naughty"... santa's a pervert.

God is said to be omnipotent, and always watching us.
He watches married couples have sex, children showering, etc.
He made Adam and Eve ignorant of their own nudity.
The same could be said of God.

Santa has become, whether we like it or not, the embodiment of Christmas. For those who embrace Santa, how they envision him is a reflection of how they envision Christmas itself.

So, yes, I saw a jewelry commericial last year with a "Christmas song" theme. I remember one line of it: "Everybody's waiting for the man with the bag."

In that case it isn't the vision of Santa that has become twisted--it's the vision of Christmas, and Santa is just a reflection of that.
For those who view Christmas as a time to collect up as many goodies as they can, Santa is the guy who brings them.

But keep in mind that the Salvation Army volunteers dress up as Santa, also. A whole lot of charities, soup kitchens and shelters embrace the image of Santa while they go all out to provide extra help to those who need it.
For them, Santa represents selflessness, aid and comfort for the afflicted.

They do? The bell ringers? Here they just stand around in everyday street clothes and ring those annoying bells.

Yes I think Santa claus is at least for the children an idol and for the big children* maybe...santa is watching you santa will give you a gift if you do good etc..

But this is not new with christianity, Holy Virgin Mother of God* Mary is another idol of the christians execpt protestants I think and the Saints just like semi-gods who are worthy to pray etc..

And all these inclinations of christians to such kind of idols comes from trinity...trinity is idolatery itself and causes other types of idolateries..

by the way, santa clause was a priest from anatolia today's turkey :)

Santa Clause isnt evil, maybe some idea's like if your bad your getting coal just like if your bad your going to Hell is bad...same idea
Santa is a figure of giving...we can all be Santa Clause's. Sheesh I still believe in Santa..as Santa always lives on....
Any idea or creation can be abused if used in the wrong way...people like to pervert anything they disagree with.

As for Christmas Songs...

Silent Night Holy Night
Drummer Boy
Away In the Manger
Hark The Herald Angels Sing
Good King Wencelas
Mary Did You Know
Oh Come All Ye Faithful
The First Noel
We three kings

I saw mommy kissing Santa Clause
Rudolph the rednosed reindeer
Deck the Halls
Frosty the snowman
Grandma Got ran over by a reindeer
Jingle Bells
Jingle Bells Rock
and my favorite...
Winter Wonderland
