  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is part of the Law, making up your own rules? How else could the Law be, first off?

You've heard of natural law, right? Well, there you go. You might also say that laws are expressions of basic intuitions or schemata we have hardwired in us. An example of the latter would be justice or fairness. Laws would simply "concretize" this intuition or schema, and there are plenty of situations with very different contexts in which these intuitions can be made into laws.

Whether or not God exists, by the way.

Hi there,

So there is an interesting problem here, right? At what point is the Law just made up? Could the Law exist, if no one "made it up"? And is it wrong, if no one objects? And will anyone object, if you wait long enough?

Lots of questions.

Thanks.

In a word yes, the "law" is based upon the rules people would make up while being people and living in society.

What rules are necessary? How would I react in that situation? Is it fair to treat these situations differently?

These are the sorts of questions that have to be answered when creating laws.
