I am sure this was discussed on this forum before, although I am also sure that thread was closed quite quickly. I do not think there can be a consensus on this matter. Personally I do listen to quite a bit of a selection of music, however, I know people who only listen to "Christian" music.

I can not post links in the forum because I do not have enough posts, but I do have a link to a video that is very informative on the subject. If you would like I can pm it to you. Just let me know in PM.

Oh man. I could post on this all day long. There is secular music that isn't sinful. There is christian music that is sinful. Slapping a label on something does not make it what the label says.

I challenge all people on this thread to google "Is Music Neutral" and see what you come up with.

I am a music teacher and I used to believe the lie that "Music is neutral and it is the lyrics that make it good or bad." But, I believe the Holy Spirit spoke to me one day about a year ago to look up whether or not that was true. What I found shocked me but it also made sense.

Music is a language. It is a way of communicating feelings and ideas and so much more. God did not just create music, music is a part of His character. That is why music is such an integral part of our beings. Music is so many different things. It is art. It is expression. It is math. It is science. It is physical. It is coordination. It is time, It affects our emotions, our brain's reward system, our nerves, our memory, our healing. So much more. I could go on about this for hours. It used to be an integral part of education (look up Trivium and Quadrivium).

But now, it is painted as a frivolous, expendable subject which is booted out of elementary education (I'm not sure how widespread this is but living in Ontario, Canada, I saw it booted out of schools over a decade ago). Even if it is reinstated, it's usually forced to be unwillingly taught by a teacher not interested in teaching it and is taught in such a backwards way that it might as well not be there at all.

These are all things I've witnessed and observed in over a decade of teaching music full time. It saddens me because it is something very important that carves new pathways in the mind (literally) and changes the way the mind works. I can say, for example, that if I had known and understood music, in secondary school, as well as I know it now, my highschool grades would have been completely different, for the better. I do my best to help my students grasp this advantage as early as possible.

Anyway. Is non-christian music sin? As a sweeping generalization, no. Most of the time, it does act as a vehicle to teach lies and embed evil deep into the subconscious. Why? Well, when Lucifer was in Heaven, who was he? He was in charge of music. He knows ALL of what I stated above. He knows how it works, in much more detail than I can even articulate. How do we teach children new concepts? We teach it to them in a song. How to we receive advertisements? Usually with a jingle. Think about it, honestly.

I'm going to leave a few links here and let you read this for yourself. But please, be honest with yourself and don't just listen to what tickles your ears. If you truly want to know the truth, seek it out and let the Holy Spirit show you what is true and what is lies. Read scripture and ask the Holy Spirit to speak its truths into your heart.

Is Music Neutral?

If Music is Neutral...

This video is great but, unfortunately, it gets cut off at the end and I haven't been able to find a second part to it :( Is Music Neutral?

I share the sentiments of the majority of people who have been posting in this thread so far. I personally think a lot depends on the lyrics. I don't see anything wrong with a moral non-Christian song promoting wholesome and valuable messages. This is no different from watching a non-Christian TV program or movie with the same type of content, or reading books/magazines of the same nature. People have varying convictions on this sort of thing.

What I do know is we all will meet with having to make decisions as to whether or not it is right to do a certain thing, and this issue is not exempt. Should I listen to this song? Read that magazine? Go to that place? Wear that outfit? Watch this show? Eat that second cookie? Well, if we are looking to God for guidance in these situations (and even tougher issues), we can't go wrong.

Amandatea, you're 100% correct. Music is NOT some neutral, blank slate that totally depends on its lyrics in order to have an impact (if that were true, classical music wouldn't make anyone feel or think about anything because it's without words, and how NOT true is that??). Music has been proven to affect heart rate, respiration, brain waves, mood. Listening to Beethoven's "Pastoral" symphony will not have the same affect on you physiologically as listening to Mussorgsky's "Night On Bald Mountain", though both are classical pieces without words. If music were absolutely neutral and without impact sans lyrics, film companies wouldn't bother paying for soundtracks and movie scores. There's a reason you don't see "death metal" relaxation CD's. Anyway... music DOES affect us, with or without words.

I am just wondering.

Just like Christian music, some is sinful, some isn't.

The first place I would start is asking whether or not it's consistent with Phillipians 4, then asking if it glorifies sin in any way or encourages you to sin. After that, I'd ask if causes a weaker brother to stumble and whether or not it's an idol to you (that is, if God revealed to you that it is not something you should be listening to and you still held on to it).

If it's consistent with Phillipians 4, doesn't glorify or encourage sin, doesn't cause a weaker brother to stumble, and isn't an idol, I'd say it's OK.

Yeah, the second article I linked states pretty much the same things you said here. They choose the music in movies and such that they do for a reason. Music moves us and communicates things to our subconscious and people who choose it know exactly what they're doing.

The only kind of music I can truly enjoy anymore is classic - usually mislabelled generally as "classical" :p - and traditional hymns and simple praise and worship. Not saying this to try and look all holy and refined, but I honestly can't stand most other music anymore. And I am someone who had tons and tons (like 800 gigabytes) of music. I was obsessed with rock music for the past decade. Including stuff like Pink Floyd and other classic rock.. things like Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne, 80s punk, Tori Amos, Prince, all kinds of Hip Hop (nothing from on the radio though, mostly old or underground stuff), Sarah McGlachlan ..... just to show the variety of different music I enjoyed in the past. It's all meaningless to me anymore.

My way of listening to it is that the music cannot slander God's name or talk badly about Him or His kingdom. I also do not like lyrics that have profanity(I'll get the clean version always). My whole goal is that if a child heard it, would it be offensive? Now, I do have some exceptions when their is a great song with one or two bad words, but the rest of the song is good. This follows my own personal conviction. A good example is a band called Tool. They have a song called "sober" which I really liked until I actually "listened" to the lyrics! Then I find out that Maynard(lead singer) is a hardcore atheist and I found a song on YouTube wher he actually attacks God and Jesus in the most horrific ways I could ever imagine! After that I don't care what that dude puts out- I ain't playin it!
Recently I've really gotten into Lecrae, Trip Lee, Andy Mineo, Sho Baraka, etc.. They have the most incredible God- inspired lyrics, the best rhythms, and best flows of anything I know of out there. I can honestly say that finding them really helped me to forget about the rest!

Is Miles Davis, Kind of Blue... album evil???? I dont want to listen to evil music, I love Jazz and dont get an evil vibe from it....what do you think?

If music does not have evil words and doesn't make you feel bad, is it Satanic?

Some say yes and some say no.....I don't know!

This is bothering me as I don't want to stumble, and I don't want to get superstitious either. I will pray about it.

Disclaimer: I'm not answering to say that it is indeed evil, but just clinically speaking about what I've researched about how music works.

I don't know Miles Davis' music will enough to judge, but jazz music itself skews the way rhythm was originally intended by God, to work. I also appreciate jazz, but it is a corruption of "pure" structure of music which God had intended. Not ragging on jazz music here, just answering the question :)
