I apologize if I'm posting in the incorrect forum (if it is, please feel free to have it moved,) although I'd think this forum receives this type of question often but I want to be assured I'm not displeasing God. I once went though my entire library and deleted almost every secular song. The content of my music library quickly dropped from 500 songs to under 100.

Recently, I've become more relaxed in regards to what type of music I let myself be exposed to and developed a taste for different types of music. I used to listen to artists like Nirvana and Eminem, but after researching the past of some of the musicians I concluded their music wasn't anything I should be listening to, no matter how pleasing to the ears. I may get some laughs for this, but I definitely believe some artists (especially the more prominent ones) are evil-minded and incorporate messages into their music to negatively influence the public. I don't listen to most pop music because of this. Currently, I mostly listen to alternative and indie rock.

I'll list some of the music in my iTunes library: Bright Eyes, Elliot Smith, Evanescence, Lana Del Rey, Linkin Park, Marina and The Diamonds, Mayday Parade, Pierce the Veil, Radiohead, The Smiths, and System of a Down.

That's not nearly all of it either, but it's generally the type of music I listen to. Any thoughts?

Yes thats what I did to when God kinda convicted me about what things I was listening to, what messages I was receiving.
No, its entirely normal for a christian to do this. We are to love what is good and be innocent of evil.

In heaven theres not going to be any crying and sorrow, heartache, longing or violence...so God is just preparing us. We going to be singing joyful songs all the time.

I am familiar only with a couple of the bands you list.

Being led to give up music is not unusual. But realize it might not be with the music itself; rather, what it is and means to you personally.

Back in 1974 I was led to get rid of a bunch of acid rock, heavy metal and other secular music. I gave away or destroyed probably a couple of hundred LP vinyl discs.

But about 10 years later, one by one, I felt led to start listening and even owning those bands again. Not everything came back - maybe about half.

Iron Butterflly, the Beatles, Moody Blues and the Who came back.

Black Sabbath, Genesis, 10 Years After and Uriah Heep never did.

Hendrix and Led Zeppelin did in a limited way. And those have only been in the last 10 years or so.

Was it worth it? Absolutely. When it came back, I owned the music and not the other way around.

So I can tell you 40 years later - God is not opposed to secular music; but will not allow it to become an idol for us. (it was for me) He will allow no other "gods" between us and Him.

Bolding mine.

I tend to disagree with DaveW-Ohev most of the time, but here he is spot on.

I have one particular to add. There are many songs about specific issues where the fool can listen and decide it is about something bad so the song is bad. The wise man hears the same song as realizes the song is about how that thing is bad and realizes the song itself is good.

EDIT: Sadly the fool is still right in a way, it is still a bad song for him, but that is because he hears it as a fool.
