  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Do you think lying is ever ok? If so, where do we draw the line between ok lies and bad lies.

I think it's ok to lie about thing like saying you're busy and can't come to something when tou really dont wanna go. Or if a friend cooks you a meal and its bad but you say its good. Or saying you like a gift a perosn got you but its something of no use to you.

I think lying is fine in social deduction games like among us. As anyone playing those knows the games will involve being lied to.

However, lies that cause harm (like fraud, politics, scams) are never ok.

The most pertinent question here where Ethics is concerned is whether or not there is ever a time that lying is morally right. And in the case of the mid-wives in Exodus, or in the case of those hiding and attempting to protect Jews during the Holocaust, lying [or concealing the truth] was required against unjust (evil, really) powers.

Not everyone who poses with power is a good actor; and thereby, anyone who in God's sight is evil and powerful doesn't deserve to have all the details they can ever want given to them----just as the Pharaohs in Exodus came to find out.

I saw a preacher who said he was invited for a meal from a woman who attended church who was married to a man who didn't attend.
He said the food was awful and the man didn't say anything to him. He was going to tell her that the food was good but he said God told him not to lie.
The woman asked how the food was and he said "It's awful "
The woman's husband said "I knew you were a man of God!" and started coming to church

You're gonna have to point that one out to me, because I missed it.

Exodus 20:16 KJV Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
Exodus 20:16 AMP “You shall not testify falsely [that is, lie, withhold, or manipulate the truth] against your neighbor (any person).

The problem here is that in Exodus, Pharaoh is not one's neighbor, and thus, the Hebrew mid-wives protected infants by .... not telling Pharaoh the truth.

If I were going to try to show that Scripture says never lie, I would start with Matthew 5:37.

That said I agree with 2PhiloVoid and find there are some exceptions. But not just for convince. Ones to prevent real harm, and even there it is not always clear what the best (or is it least bad) course of action might be.

Today you have to prove you are who you say you are.

Which in the name of personal security is good.

As long as you have noted the expire date on the ID card or passport,

so, one day you are who you say you are and the next because of expired document,

you are not.

From a Biblical standpoint, lying is never okay. It is one of the Ten commandments (to not lie).
Victor Kugler was surely damned for his many lies.

"You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." John 8:44 NIV

There is where the Bible has something on the subject.

So, yeah, let's turn the Jews in the attic over to the Nazis! Woo Hoo! Let's here it for truth!

Bleep that noise.

Of course there are times when lying is the moral thing to do. At risk of voicing yet again the example so many people are tired of, if a Nazi asks you, "Where are the Jews," you lie.

No, because when it comes to applying anything from that verse in real life, as you seem to be pointing out with your post, it is a bit more complicated than "lying is always wrong".

In the example you are referencing, telling the Nazi's about the "Jews in the attic" is actually enabling people who are already murderers to carry on killing and getting away with it. The "father of lies" was behind the ideology that was driving the German Army at that time, "you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning,". There is a reference to the motive there.

That's slander

Slander =/= lying.
