  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is Lutheran and Protestant same thing?

The term Protestant came from the action of some Lutheran princes and free cities, though it was never meant to be a title. Most Lutherans consider ourselves to be catholics, though most other Christians call us Protestants. There is something to that though because a lot of the beliefs popularized by Luther have become cornerstones of the generic "Protestant" form of Christianity, though not all of them of course.

Lutheran and Protestant are not the same thing. Lutherans are not Roman Catholics, therefore Lutherans do belong to the Protestant branch of Christianity, which diverged from the Roman Catholic Christianity during the Protestant Reformation. Lutherans are Protestants but not all Protestants are Lutherans, in the same way that all Finns are Europeans but most Europeans are not Finns, however.

A lot of it though depends on how you define the word Protestant, and if your definition of that is "Not Roman or Eastern", then yeah we Lutherans are Protestant. Then again, it also matters what you consider the word "Catholic" to mean as well. That's the problem with labels.

I did a search and this is the first quote that came up: "Martin Luther initiated the Protestant Reformation in 1517. Lutheranism is a major branch of Protestant Christianity that identifies with the theology of Martin Luther—a German friar, ecclesiastical reformer, and theologian."

Thank you for the responses. I will stop reviewing this thread now.

No need to. Unfrotunately, some people sometimes act like there is no such thing as common decency; the rest of us can be nice.

This thread has undergone a cleanup. If your post is gone, you were either flaming and goading or you replied to a post that was.

BTW, to our visitors; Lutherans are good Christians and most of us are nice people!

I know that most Lutherans are nice people, but do they "generally" consider themselves to be Protestants? Most Protestant denominations consider themselves to be catholic (lowercase 'c').

It really depends on what you mean by the word Protestant. In one sense, Lutherans are not only Protestants, but they are the only group who can legitimately claim the term. This sense relates to the Protestation at Speyer, where the term protestant originated. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protestation_at_Speyer

In the sense of "not Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox" then yes, Lutherans are protestants, although this is an extremely sloppy way of categorizing Christian churches.

Otherwise, the term protestant, at least in America, has come to mean the Reformed and the churches historically traceable to the Reformed, such as Anglicans/Episcopalians, Baptists and their non-denominational progeny, Methodists and their Pentecostal progeny, Restorationist, and all the other blends, mixes and iterations of these churches. This is the group and the meaning that Lutherans deny being a part of, and when asked will consider themselves separate from.
