So do you think Jupiter is still a star in a taxonomic way?

If by "star" you mean "planet," then sure. You might know more about this than I, but it seems to me that stars and planets have crucial differences that will affect a proper taxonomy. Stars emit their own light; whereas, planets reflect the light of stars. Planets orbit stars, and stars orbit the center of the galaxy? You can correct me if I'm wrong here. At any rate, whatever words we use for each, I think for taxonomic purposes those differences would be taken into account and prevent a one-for-one identification. Does that make sense, or no?

It does ... thanks!

I get the analogy.

But why does it have to just be an analogy? why can't it be both?

Like the parables? real events that happened, but told with a spiritual message in mind.

So you think the planets are literally angels?

No. But I think the stars (i.e., those luminous spheroids of plasma held together by their own gravity) are their homes.

I'm proposing that Jupiter is both a "wandering star" per the Bible, and a "planet" per science.

In this context those phrases are exact synonyms. (But that doesn't make Jupiter 'a star')

How does that fit with Rev 9:1?

And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

Look at it this way:

And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw [the Johnson house] fall from heaven unto the earth; and to [Mr Johnson] was given the key of the bottomless pit.

One member here suggested changing a thread to this title, and I liked his suggestion; and since it isn't my thread, and I can't change the title, I'll make my own thread.

Is Jupiter still a star?

According to the Bible, yes it is.

Jude 13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

But science says otherwise, calling Jupiter a "planet."
They could have called the wandering stars "Jews" if they wanted to.

So let's see if we can reconcile this conundrum, shall we? before someone says Jude didn't know what he was talking about?

I submit we modify Linnaeus' classification and apply it to this problem thusly:

Family: Wandering Star
Genus: Planet
Species: Jupiter

And bingo! No more conundrum!

Jupiter is both a wandering star and a planet!

Discuss.

The definition of "Star" in scripture is - a point of light in the sky.
We have since then created different categories for these lights
based on our own choice of properties.

That doesn't mean the old definitions were wrong, just different.

People should get their facts straight.
The most autocratic despotic organization in the history of mankind, the IAU (International Astronomy Union) issued a presidential decree in 1965 that planets were no longer to be referred to as "wandering stars" but "wand'rin stars".
The president at the time was Lee Marvin who according to fake news was depicted as an actor.

Here is Lee Marvin's famous decree implementing the term "wand'rin star" into the astronomy textbooks.
