Is Judas in Hell? Are we certain of this?

It would certainly have been. I think it is quite unfortunate for Judas. Imagine the witness he could have given to God's grace if he was converted and forgiven by the resurrected Christ! Yet it wasn't so.

Kind of like when Pope JPII forgave that guy who shot him.

Woah! I didn't mean for this to be such a controversy and I also didn't mean anything bad by posting this. I get the feeling that a few of you think that I asked this with the wrong motives or something but I assure you that I didn't.

Anyway, my opinion is that he is more than likely in Hell but I don't believe that we should judge the soul of anyone so its possible that he's in Heaven.

Okay, so say he chooses not to betray Christ. Does the whole thing never happen? Seems unlikely.
I see what you are getting at. Which is that if:

A. someone had to betray Christ
B. that someone went to hell
C. God creates a person knowing there is no chance he can be saved.... so why did He create that person?

I do not know the answer.

Judas is little different from Peter... except that Peter didn't hang himself. He did not despair and waited knowing the promise of Our Lord that on the third day he would rise again.

Judas is not reprobate because he betrayed Jesus, he is reprobate because he then despaired and committed suicide.

That is an interesting thought that God created someone even though they couldn't be saved. Even though none of us have the answer to that. What I just thought about maybe that was the whole point of his existence and that's why Judas was created. Or maybe Judas volunteered?? I don't know?! But that is a good question to bring up in my Religious Class.

The way my eight year old son is praying for and offering sacrifices and having Masses said for Judas Iscariot- I shall be expecting him out of purgatory sometime soon...

God uses flawed and broken human beings to show us that He is indeed almighty. God brings about the salvation of the world through one man's betrayal--wow! That is an astounding thought for one so little and broken as me--God can use my very wretchedness to bring about great and wonderous things.

ANd God bless our priest who takes Timmy seriously enough to offer Mass for him. Because he had no money for a stipend Tim said he would say n Our Father and Hail MAry everyday instead-- it's been months and he hasn't missed a single day praying...not one! ( ANd he has since added daily prayers for a handful of other priests)

As far as i know theres no definitive teaching on where Judas went. I guess we will all find out someday!

if you think about it if he had no remorse for what he did..he would have went on his way like "no biggie"....but he felt so bad for what he did he committed suicide! Who knows what he prayed before his death? only him and God know!

I'm pretty sure he comitted suicide from the torture of what he did, not actual repentance. If he repented he could have just accepted grace and mercy. The fact that he comitted suicide is more of the act of a condemned man, in my oppinion. I believe he went to hell, but who could really know?

Deuteronomy 21: 23

For he who is hanged is accursed of God

The first time I read this I immediately thought of Judas. the only verse I've found that talks about hanging from a tree and it's judas preffered method of suicide. Sorry just thought I'd let you know that little bit of info.

Yet another reason we should not prevent the children from going to Him. You never know when you'll need one of them to help you!

If I had to define "time" I'd probably define it as "a grace of God". For with time, old wounds heal, and those who we may not be able to forgive at the moment of the unjust deed, can be forgiven, given enough time.

Satan "entered" Judas according to Luke - so is he culpable for the sin of betrayal? Its interesting the passion begins in a garden with Christ, the new Adam, facing Judas, standing in for the serpent.

My fav band U2 has an opinion on this - there may be some hope for him in the end.

Haven't seen you in quite a while
I was down the hole just passing time
Last time we met was a low-lit room
We were as close together as a bride and groom
We ate the food, we drank the wine
Everybody having a good time
Except you
You were talking about the end of the world

I took the money
I spiked your drink
You miss too much these days if you stop to think
You lead me on with those innocent eyes
You know I love the element of surprise
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You...you were acting like it was
The end of the world

In my dream I was drowning my sorrows
But my sorrows, they learned to swim
Surrounding me, going down on me
Spilling over the brim
Waves of regret and waves of joy
I reached out for the one I tried to destroy
You...you said you'd wait
'til the end of the wor

Judas didn't repent. He despaired and committed suicide. That is sin against the Holy Spirit. St. Peter committed a great sin too but he repented.

Judas could have betrayed Jesus and later been saved but he wasn't because he hanged himself and rejected God's grace. Judas was a thief and a devil.
