Is Judas in Hell? Are we certain of this?

Hi everyone. Does the Church teach that Judas is in Hell or is there a possibility that he in fact went to purgatory and is possibly still there or maybe even in Heaven by now? Could he have repented and gone to Heaven?

:scratch:Which Apostles said it was better he was never born...??

If it would be better he was not born, then we can assume he went to hell..after all purgatory is a temporary placement until reaching Heaven, and Heaven is our perfect reward.

I would say according to scripture, he is in hell.

Unfortunately I think he is in hell. I wish it was not so, but Jesus said "It would be better if he had never been born."

What is the only thing worse than not existing? Hell. I do not know what else Jesus could have meant.

 Thanks for clearing that up...lately my head has been in a blender.

Well, given that Judas' betrayal seems like a necessary component for the whole "Death and Resurrection" bit, and his suicide was prompted by his feelings of guilt (therefore repentence), I wouldn't draw too many conclusions.

He despaired though. Godly guilt produces repentance. If Judas had remained alive until the resurrection he could have been reinstated like Blessed Peter and gone on to be a great saint. Didn't Jesus say that "even one among you is a devil"?

That makes his actions no less evil nor reduce the consequences of betraying the Son of God.

His suicide would need it's own repentance.

True, but even though his role was necessary, he still freely chose it and was thus culpable. And the fact that his guilt led him to suicide rather than turning to Christ for forgiveness (like Peter), doesn't speak much in his favor.

I don't know that it has ever been definitively taught that he's in Hell, but the chances seem rather high.

That would have been interesting.

It would certainly have been. I think it is quite unfortunate for Judas. Imagine the witness he could have given to God's grace if he was converted and forgiven by the resurrected Christ! Yet it wasn't so.
