Is it wrong to obey simply to avoid hell? And if it is wrong, why did God create hell if he did not want us to fear?

If you do what is right then you are righteous. If you don't do what is right then its not righteous. Very simple concept people shoot angles with to justify doing what they feel like doing.
If it were only that simple. Just thinking about doing something wrong is sinful, according to some.

Jesus had a few words for those who thought they could curry favor with God simply by following all the laws even though their hearts were a whole different story.
Matthew 23:27 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean."
Obedience can be a good thing, but what determines whether it's empty or genuine is your motive. Are you obeying out of love and contrite, repentant spirit? If you're just trying to get a "ticket out of hell", that's not what God wants from you.
God created hell for Satan and his demons. When man decided to sin and rebel, it became the destination for those who reject God. Hell was not created for mankind, but that is where those who reject God will end up.
Obedience to a perceived authority has nothing to do with morality. That's mere obedience.
Morality as it relates to this is to contemplate whatever the "authority" commands you to do and, through your own moral understanding, decide wheter or not the command is a good one or a bad one.
Blindly following whatever a perceived authority demands you to do is pretty much removed as far as it can be from moral contemplation of your actions and decisions.
When you make it clear that the consequences of disobedience and disbelief towards you are hell it becomes rather hard, I would think, to separate that from your reasons for obedience and praise.

I guess I don't really have morals then. I obey the Bible, or I try to anyways, for fear of punishment. Not because I love the commandments that are in the Bible.
