  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it wrong to pray about this?

I recently recieved a speeding ticket in the great state of North Carolina. I was doing 85 in a 65. It was stupid. Completely stupid. I was rushing to see my gilfriend who I had not seen in 3 weeks. Anyway I asked the officer for mercy, he gave me none. The ticket is a mandatory court appearance. I cannot afford a ticket at all. I dont have a full time job, I am a college student. My insurance is going to skyrocket if I get a reckless driving conviction. Anyway, my plan is showing up and throwing myself at the mercy of the court, and of God. My friends want me to lie, but I know nothing good will come out of lying. So my question is, is it wrong to ask God to show mercy and let the judge throw out my case? If it isnt wrong, thats the prayer I need because thats the only thing I can afford right now, either that or pray that the State Trooper who pulled me over doesn't show up for my court appearance (not that I want something bad to happen to him). So if you guys can please pray for me, I really got myself into some crap this time.

I don't think it is wrong to ask God that the judge show mercy. Ask God for the guidance and the words to say when you go into court. Do NOT under any circumstances lie. You are under oath and if you lie you will be facing jail time if you are caught lying under oath... which is a felony... that would screw up your life a lot more than just telling the truth.

Sometimes judges will show mercy when you tell them you are a college student and you can't afford for your insurance to go up.

I just got a speeding ticket last month, and my cousin told me to tell the truth to the judge, but I went in a week before my court date and just pleaded guilty and paid the ticket... I didn't have to show up for court, because I was below the cut off.

Also, follow the speed limit in the future, you won't find yourself in trouble ;)

I wouldn't expect God to just make your situation disappear. Since you know you were doing wrong He's probably going to let you learn your lesson in one way or another. If you pray for something that isn't going to bring glory to the Lord it simply won't be granted.

This doesn't mean however that you shouldn't pray, it just means you shoudn' expect God to bail you out either. Simply learn your lesson, take what you get from the judge, and certainly don't lie.

Pray about the situation first and foremost. I've dealt with traffic courts a few times. If this state allows the no contest plead, that is what I would plead. However, you may have the option of guilty with an explanation. Show up to court early. Normally traffic court schedules lots of people at the same time. This can make you nervous because you will be around a lot of other people. This can be a good or bad thing. I've follow a few DUIs and wreckless driving cases, when all I had was a minor speeding ticket.

Also, remember you can reschedule often times your court appearance. Just be sure you tell the court clerks. Being polite and respectful to the clerks, can often save you in the long run. I once had to reschedule do to a conflict with a meeting I had. I had helped this clerk at the store I worked at and she recognized. She helped pull a few strings, I plead guilty. I didn't even have to attend court.

I've talked with my share of judges. When talking be polite and respectful. Explain your situation as truthfully and honest as possible. It's easier to remember the truth than keep trying to remember some part of a lie.

Normally you can do driving school and have the points withheld. Driving school is normally about $70-$100. It's fairly simple. In some states, you can even do it online. More than likely you can get the court to give you a certain amount of hours community service in place of the money.

Other things to do when facing court, dress nice. Also pull out any earings, or piercings you may have and cover as many tatoos as possible. These kinds of things will help you look more respectable instead of looking like a punk kid.
