If your friends would not subject themselves to "gun slinging" gangsta rap, good for them. That is a blessing!!!! Christian rap Blesses God just like any other genre.

If you took a traditional church hymn such as Amazing Grace and changed the lyrics to ones of perversion, I would hope that no one would be okay with it, simply because the tone is that to a traditional church hymn? :confused:

It is not wrong to listen to rap, if you are speaking of the genre itself (i.e. the beats, tempo, etc.). What we are believers should be concerned about are the lyrics/message of the music we listen to, regardless if its rap, rock, pop, or whatever. The Bible tells us to that ", whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things." (Phil 3:8) Music is only a vehicle for the message - not the message itself.

If someone gave you a $100 bill that was dirty, beat-up, and crumbled does that mean that it is not as valuable a brand new fresh from the mint $100 bill? Oh course not! :) The value hasn't changed, just the appearance.

Now apply to the discussion - the type of music can change (outward appearance), but the message does not (the value)!

Music, itself, does not make a Christian song, The lyrics does.

I think whatever you put into your mind, you will get out. Just like whatever you put into your life, you'll get out of your life. It's the same principle. Music is impressionable, especially to vulnerability. I don't think anyone will go to hell because they listen to secular music, but I think by doing so, that person is making their spiritual life (following Christ) even more difficult.

Chritian rap is very very cool stuff. So far All i know about is LA Symphony, which is more of the West coast underground hip hop, comparable to Hieroglyphics (mainstream underground). Then I just got into Redcloud which is totally unlike any rap ive ever heard. Very tribal mellow beats and a wierd rapping style make his cd very cool to listen to. Then, the Cross Movement, which i can only compare to harder hip hop and rap artists. They are my favorite because the beats are raw, the lyrics are truthful, and overall it just sounds good. Knowdaverbs and Propaganda arent bad either to check out (Cali Hip hop). Peace!

It seems like these type of posts come up every time you turn around. For the sake of this subject for future members we should try to keep this one bumped up.

Rap/Hip-Hop is a genre of music just like R&B, Rock, Jazz, e.t.c. Now the type of music is not bad. It is what is in the music(Lyrics) that you have to make the judgement call on. If it is something you know your heavenly father wouldn't approve of then you should'nt listen to it. The music itself is not the problem it is what we put in it that can be. This is not just with Rap but with other genres of music. For example, the difference between R. Kelly's "BUMP n GRIND" and Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon In The Sky" are obvious. The first song promotes sex and fufilling the flesh and the second one promotes pure love between both a man and woman. However, even the second song can be dangerous if you dwell on it if you are single. It's all about discretion and listening to the Holy Spirit. It's how you gaurd your heart.

So no, listening to rap isn't wrong.

YO you people just simply need to think outta the box here...Ask yourselves "What Would Jesus Do?" I mean i couldnt imagine our Lord running around with headphones on listening to lil John and the eastsideboyz. I mean rapping about sex, drugs, girls, and dead presidents isnt something our Lord would listen to so why would you? If you want to listen to rap then stick with Christian Rap, its got a positive message and you wont have to question weather its right or wrong.
