And do you think any choir director would welcome a bass or baritone going back and forth between their regular part and the tenor part within the same tune (when the notes aren't too high) in order to help out the tenors, or would they rather a given singer pick one part or the other throughout? (choir directors can chime in on this).
Tenors seem to be in much higher demand than basses based on sheer numbers. Add to this the fact that many basses are large men with not only very deep but very resonant voices, and the balance will never be right, assuming an equal volume balance between all voices is an ideal goal of any choir, and I've never had anyone tell me that it's not.
I also don't know why men are always outnumbered by women, but that's true even in kid's school choirs on up through college. I don't see how any choir director would want it that way, nor turn people away due to limits based on gender. Women seem more interested in singing choral music than men. More men want to sing country, pop, and rock tunes, especially if they can play guitar and join a band to earn some extra pocket money on the weekends. Do choir talents without being an opera star EVER pay anything?
