  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it still stealing?

I'd point out the mistake and get them to take the second fridge back. I don't want anything that I didn't pay for. Keeping the fridge means that when the company inevitably realises their mistake, whether it be that day, in a week's time, or three months time, they will most probably call the police and report you for stealing or posessing property that doesn't belong to you.

Nope, I didnt do anything proactive to get the fridge. Who am I to tell them how to do thier job?

Ok here's a thought. What if the roles were reversed? What if you owned that company that delivered fridges and for some reason, one of your customers got two.

Would you want him to fess up and let you know that he got a second fridge? Or would you be willing to give him a free thousand-dollar fridge? Would your opinion of him change at all if you knew he kept the fridge that didn't belong to him?

Oh and you're not allowed to say that if you were in charge, you wouldn't have let this mix-up happen ^_^

Id shrug it off and take steps to prevent it happening again.

Id contact the person and say "Hey, we accidentally delivered an extra fridge to your place, do you still have it, if you do could you please return it."

If they said yes and forked it over, I'd thank them and give them a discount on thier next purchase for thier honesty. If they said no, Id stop selling to them and contact other suppliers, let them know what happened. Im not going to get all fired up and get in a legal battle over a stupid fridge.

As for the employee that made the mistake, Id check out thier work and see if this was a common mistake or if this was a one time thing. If its happened repeatedly, Id probably fire them. If it was a one or two time thing, Id probably pull them aside and say "Hey, keep your eyes open next time."

In my opinion its the same as dropping a dollar on the ground. My company screwed up and someone benefitted from the screw up, that should teach me to be more careful next time

And like I said, if they dont want to give it back or they "lost" it. Then I blacklist them and dont do business with them ever again

It would be property belonging to another, knowingly being in your control against the wishes of the owner. It cost them money, they had no intention of giving it away, and you did nothing to cause them intent to transfer possession to you. Yes, it's still wrong. Whether or not it can be technically defined as "stealing" or "theft" is a matter of jurisdictional statute. But it would be wrong regardless.

I just saw this on an episode of Roseanne...only it was a stove.
Yes, of course it's stealing, even if the delivery was their mistake.

No, i don't think its wrong, unless you previously promised someone that you would give back extra fridges that they gave you accidentally. If they asked for it back, then of course you should give it to them, but otherwise why bother? I don't think inaction can be immoral unless you have already agreed to act in a certain situation and then fail to do so.

I don't know if you can say that you are holding it against the wishes of the owner, since the owner is unaware of its existence (otherwise he would be getting it back). They intended to give it away, they just made the mistake of giving you an extra.

Yes, it's wrong. I'm not sure if it's officially stealing, but it's wrong. Plus, who the heck wants two refridgerators? Energy costs are so high now, it's bad enough having to pay to keep one running.

I ordered a bunch of furniture from IKEA a few years ago, and I'd ordered four dressers and they sent me seven. I called and told them, but apparently it would have been more trouble to send a truck out and bring them back than to just let me keep them, so I got three extra dressers, guilt-free. So, in that case, honesty was indeed the best policy. ;)

Since it was their mistake, I would expect them to deal with all the fees involved in returning the refrigerator, but I would absolutely tell them about the mistake. I would consider it stealing not to. Likewise, I give back money when I notice someone has given me too much change. I don't see the difference in those things.

Yes, I think for me (I am the only one I can answer for) it would be wrong. I would refuse to accept it and tell the delivery guy I just got one already from them.

Dont need the hassle of the Appliance Store owner bothering me everyday with phone calls or visits, taking up the busy time I have to run my restaraunt for the return of the 'fridge or taking me to small claims court - more time and money lost. I am trying to run/start a business and the negative press wouldnt do me any good; ergo, I may have just made a good customer who has friends that will eat at my place and word of mouth is good advertisement. :)
