  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it right for a Wesleyan to do this?

Lately, to help get me in a praying mindset, I've been listening to a lot of catholic/orthodox liturgical music. I guess you could say it helps get lock me in a mindset of prayer. Plus, if I'm honest, it's just pleasant to hear.

But is it right for a Wesleyan to do this?

Here is an example.

Yes, it is right for a Wesleyan to do this. I love Gregorian and Orthodox chant especially when I am trying to sleep or have a migraine. Granted, some songs that have a huge emphasis on Mary can be a bit much for me [especially if there are a lot on a CD] but generally, I love listening to it.

One thing that (in my humble opinion) separates Wesleyan Christians from our more fundamentalists counterparts is that we don't hold this belief that one should never be exposed to anything different. Actually, to the contrary; we embrace traditions, theologies, and understandings different than ours.

I enjoy that sort of stuff, too. Some of the theology isn't my theology (as Marie alluded to, with a lot of Mary-focused worship); but that's okay. You take it for what it is and don't worry about what it isn't.

I grew up in a fundamentalist church where you weren't allowed to attend worship or be exposed to any theology other than your own. Many were even concerned about public schools and things like that potentially harming our poor, stupid brains with things like evolution or other religions. I didn't like feeling like I was so stupid that I had to live hidden from the rest of the world. I love that Wesleyanism understands me as God understands me, of sacred worth. Smart enough to enjoy a gregorian chant without feeing compelled to build a shrine of Mary in my backyard!

As long as it is not changing your views to that of a Catholic/Orthodox I don't see the problem.

Even if it did.
