There is the old story about the man sitting on his roof in a flood and a row boat comes along as they say "Jump in" and the man says no he is waiting for God to rescue him, then a larger boat comes along and he says no, then a helicopter comes along and he says no and finally he drowns and goes to heaven and asks God why he didn't save him and God says "I sent a row boat, a charter boat and a helicopter, what else did you want?"
I think we need to remember that the everyday occurrences also have God in them. That God uses people not always some miraculous sign from the heavens.
I also think sometimes people can get stuck in legalism or fear of paganism. So they purge their house of everything, read only the Bible and become 'holy.' Only issue then is they are so disconnected from the world that they can no longer relate to people. If you can't strike up a friendship and relate how can you effectively minister?
1 Corinthians 9
19Though I am free of obligation to anyone, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), to win those under the law. 21To those without the law I became like one without the law (though I am not outside the law of God but am under the law of Christ), to win those without the law. 22To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23I do all this for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.
