Is it okay to watch Gravity Falls?

I just started watching GF the other day because it’s been getting popular lately, and I absolutely LOVE it. I’m about 1 season in and it just feels like the perfect show for me. The humor, concept, plot and characters are all so enjoyable to me. But then I started feeling weird about it, and I looked it up and it turns out a lot of Christians think it’s satanic because of imagery of the Illuminati symbol, among a few other things. I guess I’m just a bit confused because I thought that was the point of the show? It’s weird and paranormal, and the main villain IS an Illuminati symbol? Plus, I didn’t take any of it as them saying the Illuminati is good, because bill cipher (the character that resembles those symbols) is literally a villain and not depicted in a good light. Also, apparently there was a tweet by the creator that said that all of the characters were satanists? Sorry this is so long, but I’m just very confused and disappointed, and wondering if this is something I can continue watching.

If you feel bad about watching Gravity Falls, skip it. When in doubt, toss it out. Also, paranormal stuff can be a bit demonic.

I have watched the entire series and I thought it builds to a very moral conclusion and lesson about family. There was nothing that challenged my Christian beliefs since the paranormal stuff is clearly presented as parody, fiction, and not to be taken seriously. The main characters ' responses to this fictional world are real and admirable in a Christian sense. There is even a noble sacrifice in the last episode.

Gravity Falls is not sinful or anti-Christian at all — it’s just a fun, quirky mystery cartoon that plays with paranormal themes in a lighthearted way. The Illuminati imagery and symbols are there for storytelling and atmosphere, not as an endorsement of anything evil. In fact, like you pointed out, Bill Cipher (the one who resembles that symbol) is literally the villain of the show, and the story makes it clear he’s not good.


Sometimes people read too much into creative choices and assume they’re dangerous, but really Gravity Falls is just harmless entertainment. It’s imaginative, funny, and even has a lot of positive themes like friendship, family, and perseverance. As Christians, we don’t have to be afraid of every piece of fiction that uses spooky or mysterious imagery — enjoying a show like this doesn’t mean you’re supporting anything unbiblical.


So yes, it’s perfectly fine to keep watching if you’re enjoying it. It’s a creative and harmless show, and you’re not doing anything wrong by liking it.
