As a professional, John the Baptizer thought it was okay, Luke 3:
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
John didn't tell them to quit their jobs.

I remember when the first gulf was under way. I was on leave and woke up to see that the Army had entered into Iraq. I was enjoying the thought of closing with the enemy and exacting vengeance. My Mom looked at me and wondered what ever became of her sweet little boy. That ruined my party.
The law refers to a sacrifice by those returning from battle. The taking of life exacts a toll upon the believer.
Although to this day I identify with those in uniform, the believer in me sees the danger of enjoying killing too much.
