It's ethical if you have a security related job which has that as part of it's role for penetration testing purposes. Another example would be for individuals to find flaws in websites and network enabled products, providing you don't actually exploit or make gain from the flaw - this is a questionable practice even though it might be done with good intentions.

But its invasion of property, so I guess its more of a moral thing.

It's absolutely un-Christian.
Not only is it illegal, why you would want to violate the privacy of someone's computer is worrying.
That said, for academic and professional reasons and circumstances, it's absolutely fine. If you're working as a penetration tester for example it's your job to find weaknesses, but it's done with consent and in a controlled environment.
Your best bet would be to get an old computer or run a virtual machine and do it that way.

I agree with the social network things and there are governments doing the same, but who are we to condemn if we sink to the same level using their wrongs as justification?
And yes, a random computer is and would be best, but that doesn't mean to say you can't simulate most of that in a VM or on an old PC.
